Overview
Kyobunkwan (株式会社教文館, Christian Literature Society of Japan) is a Japanese bookstore and publisher founded in 1885 (Meiji 18) as a base for Protestant publishing and Christian book distribution in Japan. It has operated in Ginza, Tokyo, and describes itself as the only street-level bookstore remaining on Ginza's Chuo-dori. Its multi-floor sales area includes general magazines and books, Christian books, church goods, a cafe, and a children's book floor named Narnia Country. It also operates publishing, cafe, and real estate leasing businesses.
History
Kyobunkwan was founded on September 9, 1885 (Meiji 18), when Methodist Episcopal Church missionaries from the United States, meeting in Tsukiji, Tokyo, selected L. W. Squire as the first publishing agent to manage the distribution and sale of tracts and books and to conduct future publishing activities. In 1891 (Meiji 24), it opened a bookstore in Ginza and has since been known as a long-established Ginza bookstore and publisher. The company describes itself as having contributed to the development of Christian culture in Japan for 140 years. Its current building, completed in 1933 (Showa 8), was designed by architect Antonin Raymond and survived wartime damage; it remains in use as a Ginza bookstore. The building's basic structure is unchanged from completion, and it passed seismic diagnosis requirements for buildings facing Tokyo's emergency transport roads.
