Overview
Kymeta builds durable user terminals for mission-critical operations, describing itself as offering the first electronically scanning, flat-panel satellite terminal for fixed and mobile platforms, combined with global high-bandwidth services and support. Its technology is built upon fundamental metamaterials research at Duke University, and the company spun out of Intellectual Ventures in 2012 after creating a metamaterial antenna that could scan along two axes. Its product line includes the Kestrel u5, Osprey u8, Goshawk u8 and Peregrine u8 terminals, alongside the global Kymeta Broadband (KBB) network.
History
Kymeta's technology is built upon fundamental metamaterials research at Duke University. The company's published timeline traces the field from Victor Veselago's 1967 theoretical analysis of materials with both negative permittivity and permeability, through Sir John Pendry's 1999 paper conceiving the first metamaterial, to David R. Smith's 2001 construction of the world's first metamaterials structure and his 2008 start of initial development of the metamaterials that would become Kymeta's core technology. In 2012, encouraged by 2011 success in creating a metamaterial antenna that could scan along two axes, Kymeta spun out of Intellectual Ventures, a Seattle-area incubator.
Products and positioning
Resilient connectivity for mission-critical operations, with military-grade reliability and security.
Kestrel u5

Kymeta Osprey u8
A terminal that empowers defense and government operators with resilient, fully-integrated Multi-Orbit and Multi-Network connectivity, built to Mil-STD with embedded A-PNT and GNSS-denied capabilities.
Kymeta Goshawk u8
A turnkey terminal able to switch dynamically between LEO, GEO and cellular networks, with robust and durable hardware suitable for security and intelligence agencies.
Peregrine u8
A maritime terminal for staying connected even in rough conditions on the open ocean, inland waterways, or near shore.
