History
The history of Kuthuparamba is closely linked to the Kottayam royal family of Malabar. Legend holds that the name Kuthuparamba derives from 'Koothu' (a traditional dance-drama) and 'paramba' (field), referring to a place where Kathakali artists performed. In the latter half of the 18th century, the Kottayam royal family of Malabar ceded Kuthuparamba Maidanam and surrounding areas to the British for military purposes. The Kuthuparamba Panchayat was formed in August 1939, covering the revenue villages of Ambilad, Naravoor, and Thrikkannapuram. The first panchayat committee was elected by show of hands, with Dr. D. Kumaran as president and Murikancheri Gopalan as vice-president. In 1953, the panchayat limits were reorganized to include Kuthuparamba, Manantheri, and Patyam revenue villages. In the first election held under secret ballot, Shri K.K. Nair was elected president as an independent candidate supported by the Communist Party. The foundation stone for the panchayat office building was laid on 6 August 1958, and it was inaugurated on 30 August 1960 by the then Kerala Chief Minister Pattam Thanu Pillai. Following the enactment of the Panchayat Act in 1960, the panchayat limits were reduced to Kuthuparamba revenue village only. In 1962, Kuthuparamba was upgraded to a selection grade panchayat with 9 wards. In the 1962 election, Shri K.K. Nair was elected president and Shri Abdullah Master as vice-president. After 1962, K.K. Nair continued as president for 17 years until the 1979 election. In 1979, elections were held for 10 wards, and Shri V.K. Chandu was elected president under a CPI(M)-led committee. This committee was dissolved upon expiry of its term, and from 1984 to 1988 the panchayat was under official administration. In 1988, elections were held for 11 wards, and Shri V.K. Chandu was elected president under CPI(M) and Shri K. Nanu Master as vice-president. From 1 April 1990, Kuthuparamba Special Grade Panchayat was upgraded to a municipality. The existing committee was converted into an advisory committee. On 30 June 1992, the advisory committee was dissolved and a special officer was appointed. Following the 74th Constitutional Amendment passed by the Indian Parliament in 1992, urban local bodies became constitutional institutions, and this was accepted by the State Legislative Assembly in 1994. Subsequently, in 1995, the first election to the 20 wards of Kuthuparamba Municipality was held, and Smt. C.V. Malini was elected as the first chairperson, with Shri N.K. Sreenivasan Master as vice-chairman. On 27 September 2000, elections were held for 23 wards, and the LDF led by CPI(M) won a majority. Shri K. Dhananjayan became chairman and Shri N. Vasu Master became vice-chairman. In the September 2005 election, out of 25 wards, the LDF led by CPI(M) won 24 seats and came to power. Shri N.K. Sreenivasan Master was elected chairman and Shri N. Vasu Master as vice-chairman. In the 2010 local body election, LDF won 24 seats and UDF won 4 seats. Adv. Padmaja Padmanabhan was elected chairperson and Shri P.M. Madhusoodanan as vice-chairman.
