Overview
Kurashiki Ivy Square is a complex tourist facility in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It was redeveloped from the former Kurashiki Spinning Mill (now Kurabo) and includes a hotel, restaurants, banquet halls, experience workshops, a history museum, and shops. The facility is adjacent to the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter and was recognized as a Modern Industrial Heritage Site in 2007 and as a Japan Heritage component in 2017.
History
Kurashiki Ivy Square was redeveloped from the former Kurashiki Spinning Mill (now Kurabo) main factory, which was built in 1889. In the 1960s, due to a shortage of lodging and dining facilities for tourists to the Kurashiki Bikan area, Kurabo decided to redevelop the factory. The design was by Urabe Chinzaburo, preserving the factory's exterior and basic structure. The facility opened on May 26, 1974. In 2007, it was certified as a Modern Industrial Heritage Site by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and in 2017, it was certified as a component of Japan Heritage by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
