Overview
The Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof is a non-profit registered association (eingetragener Verein) founded in 1999 in the Harburg district of Hamburg, Germany. It is dedicated to the promotion and mediation of young contemporary art. Its activities encompass exhibitions of contemporary art, cultural events, conferences, and the publication of books and records. The association is located in the former waiting room of the Harburg long-distance train station, a space that dates back to 1897 and was originally used as a waiting room for first- and second-class railway passengers. The architect Hubert Stier (1838–1907) designed the room in the historicist style, combining various neo-styles: the brick building of the station references the Hanoverian school of architecture (part of the neo-Gothic brick style), while the round arches, pilasters, and wood paneling of the Kunstverein reference the Neo-Renaissance. The premises were extensively renovated on the initiative of artists Udo Dettmann and René Havekost, with support from Dieter Bobbert, former plant manager of Daimler-Chrysler in Harburg, and Hanns Kippenberger, former general representative of Deutsche Bank in Hamburg. The design and implementation were by Gössler Architekten (today GKKK Architekten, BDA). In 1999, the newly founded Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof moved into the premises. Today's exhibition space covers approximately 356 square meters and has a ceiling height of seven meters. The program initially focused on painting under the artistic direction of Udo Dettmann and René Havekost. Later, under subsequent artistic directors, the program expanded to include other event formats such as artist talks, workshops, (lecture) performances, film screenings, and concerts. The Kunstverein's program brings together different disciplines such as literature, dance, and music with the visual arts. The association is a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine (Working Group of German Art Associations) and received an award in 2016. It publishes catalogs and records, often in collaboration with other institutions and publishers such as Textem Verlag and argobooks.
