Overview

Kunstschrift is a Dutch bimonthly art journal that has been published since 1977. It grew out of the loose-leaf publication Openbaar Kunstbezit, founded in 1957 by the sculptor Johan Wertheim. The magazine is aimed at art lovers as well as art historians, and each issue is built around a single pre-selected subject — ranging from a monograph on an artist, an art movement or a technique to a broader phenomenon in art. Past issues have covered the painter Odilon Redon, depictions of the afterlife in the time of Jeroen Bosch, narrative textiles, the painterly touch, botanical drawing, and the phenomenon of drapery in art. Since 1989 the editorial team has been led by Mariëtte Haveman (editor-in-chief) and Annemiek Overbeek (managing editor). From 2016, Andrea Müller-Schirmer took over image editing and Ingrid Mersel text editing. Since 2003 Kunstschrift has been published under its own publishing house, Kunst en Schrijven. The core editorial team is supported by an editorial board including Paul van den Akker, Sara van Dijk, Epco Runia, Margriet Verhoef and Lisa Wiersma. In 2000 the editorial team received the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prize for the Humanities. Proceeds from the prize funded the 2007 book Ateliergeheimen, about the artist's workshop from 1200 to the present, conceived as an 'ideal Kunstschrift'. In 2016 the book 'Het reizende detail in de kunst van 1400 tot 1500' appeared, edited by Mariëtte Haveman and Annemiek Overbeek, and in 2017 'een kleine geschiedenis van de kunst' by Jeroen Stumpel. Both books were compiled partly from previously published pieces in Kunstschrift and partly from new essays. The magazine is sold in print and digital form, with individual issues priced around €12.75–€13.25, and it also maintains an exhibition agenda listing current and upcoming exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad.

History

Kunstschrift is a Dutch bimonthly art journal that has existed since 1977. It emerged from the loose-leaf publication Openbaar Kunstbezit, which was founded in 1957 by the sculptor Johan Wertheim. In its current form (as of 2024), each issue still offers a pre-selected subject, varying from a monograph, a movement or a technique to a phenomenon in art. Issues have been made about the painter Odilon Redon, about depictions of the afterlife in the time of Jeroen Bosch, about narrative textiles and about the painterly touch, and about special subjects such as botanical drawing or the phenomenon of drapery in art. Kunstschrift is intended for enthusiasts, but art historians also enjoy reading it. Since 1989 the editorial team has consisted of Mariëtte Haveman (editor-in-chief) and Annemiek Overbeek (managing editor). The latter was succeeded from 2016 by Andrea Müller-Schirmer (image editing) and Ingrid Mersel (text editing). Since 2003 Kunstschrift has been under the care of its own publishing house, under the name Kunst en Schrijven. The core editorial team is assisted by an editorial board consisting of Paul van den Akker, Sara van Dijk, Epco Runia, Margriet Verhoef and Lisa Wiersma. In 2000 the editorial team of Kunstschrift received the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prize for the Humanities. With the proceeds of the prize, the book Ateliergeheimen, about the artist's workshop between 1200 and the present, was produced in 2007. The book's setup, as formulated by the editorial team, was to make an 'ideal Kunstschrift'. The result is a collection of seventeen essays by renowned art historians and writers about an aspect of the history of the artist's studio in the Netherlands. In 2016 the book 'Het reizende detail in de kunst van 1400 tot 1500' appeared under the editorship of Mariëtte Haveman and Annemiek Overbeek, and in 2017 the book 'een kleine geschiedenis van de kunst' by Jeroen Stumpel. Both books were compiled partly from previously published pieces from Kunstschrift and partly from new essays.
