Overview

Kunstplatte is a cultural centre and registered non-profit association (eingetragener gemeinnütziger Verein) based in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was founded in the summer of 1998 as a joint initiative of the Stendaler Wohnungsbaugesellschaft and the Kunstsalon Monika von Puttkamer. Originally planned as a four-week short-term project, it developed into a lasting cultural institution for the city. In November 1998 it became a registered non-profit association (Amtsgericht Stendal VR 456), and in January 1999 it began its ongoing work with sponsorship funds and volunteer support. The association produces and stages musicals, plays and concerts, often with large casts of young people from across Germany. Its own orchestra, schrÄgetÖne, was founded by Sebastian Socha in 2003 and has supported numerous major productions. Kunstplatte also runs permanent and changing workshops in dance, acting, singing and the visual arts. Since November 2005 its stage has been open to guest performances and concerts, offering 80 seats and establishing itself as an independent off-theatre in northern Saxony-Anhalt. Kunstplatte has received several recognitions, including the Preis Soziale Stadt 2000, the Deutscher Jugend-Musical-Award 2004, the Kulturpreis der Stadt Stendal 2005, the 10th Jugend-Kultur-Preis of Saxony-Anhalt 2006 and the Europäischer Jugend-Musical-Award 2006. The association is led by a five-member board; its current chairperson is Bernd Zürcher. It collaborates regularly with the Theater der Altmark.

History

Kunstplatte was founded in the summer of 1998 through the collaboration of the Stendaler Wohnungsbaugesellschaft and the Kunstsalon Monika von Puttkamer. What was initially planned as a four-week short-term project quickly evolved into a sustainable cultural centre for the city of Stendal. In November 1998, it was registered as a non-profit association (Amtsgericht Stendal VR 456). In January 1999, Kunstplatte e.V. began its work with the help of sponsorship funds and volunteer support, quickly gaining recognition beyond the city limits. The association's early years were marked by numerous self-produced musicals and plays, including "Top Secret" (1999), "Die Liebe ist ein seltsames Spiel" (2000), "Linie 1" (2001), "Fame" (2002), "Rent" (2003), "Romeo & Julia" (2004), "HONK!" (2005), "Evita" (2006–2007), and "Über Sieben Brücken: Ostrock-Musical" (2009). Many of these productions involved over 100 young participants from across Germany and were accompanied by the association's own orchestra, schrÄgetÖne, founded in 2003 by Sebastian Socha. In November 2005, Kunstplatte opened its stage to guest performances, concerts and other events. With 80 seats, it established itself as an independent off-theatre in northern Saxony-Anhalt. The association also offers permanent workshops such as children's dance and sewing courses, as well as changing courses in acting, dance, singing and visual arts led by guest instructors. Kunstplatte has received several awards, including the Preis Soziale Stadt 2000, the Deutscher Jugend-Musical-Award 2004, the Kulturpreis der Stadt Stendal 2005, the 10th Jugend-Kultur-Preis of Saxony-Anhalt 2006, and the Europäischer Jugend-Musical-Award 2006. The board consists of five members, with Bernd Zürcher currently serving as chairperson. The association frequently cooperates with the Theater der Altmark on large projects.
