Overview

Kulturzentrum Linse is a communal cinema and arts centre in Weingarten (Württemberg), Germany. It offers a combination of cinema, culture and gastronomy, with a programme that includes award-winning films, live events and varied dining. The centre is supported by the City of Weingarten and operates as a registered non-profit association.

History

The history of the Linse traces back to 1913, when Remigius Scheuch, grandfather of the current owner, bought the cinematograph hall in the former rear building of the 'Cigarrenfabrik Heinrich Frank' at Liebfrauenstr. 58. He ran the cinema as a family business under the name 'Welfentheater' without interruption until the association was founded. In 1979, the first film series 'd' Linse – Kino für unterlassene Filme' started at the Welfentheater on three weekdays, initiated by Eugen Detzel, who as managing director shaped the history of the Linse for 32 years. In 1987, the association 'd'Linse – Kommunales Kino Weingarten' was founded as a registered non-profit association, which currently has about 800 members. In 2000, the small hall including a larger bistro area was completed. This extension was made possible only through high willingness to donate from the population and local companies and through 3,119 volunteer working hours. Through the enlargement of the cinema and gastronomy, the Kulturzentrum Linse e.V. became a socio-cultural centre. The Kulturzentrum Linse now has 150 seats in the large hall and 90 seats in the small hall, as well as expanded gastronomy with an outdoor area. The premises of the Linse are barrier-free. The cinema programme offers 240 films annually, children's programmes and late-night films. According to the association's statutes, arthouse films and extraordinary regional productions dominate the programme. The film series 'Cinephilo' offers films or documentaries on current topics with subsequent director talks or discussions with experts. The small-stage programme offers concerts, theatre performances, poetry slam and lectures. Regional artists are especially supported. In the Linse-Galerie, interesting artworks are presented in changing exhibitions.
