Kulturstiftung der Deutschen Vertriebenen

The Kulturstiftung der Deutschen Vertriebenen (full name: Kulturstiftung der Deutschen Vertriebenen für Wissenschaft und Forschung) is a German cultural foundation whose work is guided by the European idea of understanding in the spirit of the Charter of the German Expellees. Since its founding in 1974, it has worked to keep alive the cultural heritage of the expulsion areas and to promote cultural creation in that tradition, in the sense of § 96 of the Federal Expellees Act. Its activities include exhibitions, symposia, specialist conferences and publications, and since 2020 it has added services for institutions of independent cultural work. Its scholarly work is not geographically limited, enabling cross-border research approaches covering the entirety of German cultural heritage in Eastern Europe.

The founding of the Kulturstiftung goes back to an initiative of the then BdV president Dr. Herbert Czaja. Since its founding in 1974, the Kulturstiftung der Deutschen Vertriebenen has taken on the task of keeping alive the diverse cultural assets of the expulsion areas in the consciousness of Germans and abroad, and of promoting cultural creation in that tradition, in the sense of § 96 of the Federal Expellees Act. Its actions have always been guided by the European idea of understanding in the spirit of the Charter of the German Expellees. Preserving the cultural heritage of Germans in Eastern Europe has always represented two sides of the same coin for it. Its work can be described as exhibitions, symposia, specialist conferences and publications; since 2020, “services” for institutions of independent cultural work have been added.

A supra-regional cultural institution of all expellees, dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the German expulsion areas.
