Overview

Kulturní dům Radost (formerly Kino Radost) is a cultural house located in Havířov, Czech Republic. It is a declared cultural monument since 2003 and is considered the most typical example of socialist realist architecture in the city. The building was originally designed as one of the main cultural institutions of the newly founded city, housing the first cinema and dance hall. The foundation charter and insignia were handed over to the city on 18 December 1955 in the still unfinished building. The first film screened was 'Rudá záře nad Kladnem', and the last screening took place in June 1993. After being declared a cultural monument and undergoing reconstruction completed in July 2007, the building's purpose changed and it was renamed Kulturní dům Radost. Today, it is operated by Městské kulturní středisko Havířov (Havířov Municipal Cultural Centre) and offers spaces for rent for various events including trainings, work meetings, conferences, chamber concerts, popular and multi-genre music, entertainment and alternative theatre programs, balls, and social events. It also houses a gallery. The venue is part of a network of cultural facilities managed by the centre, which includes Kulturní dům Petra Bezruče, Kulturní dům Leoše Janáčka, Společenský dům, Kino Centrum, and Letní kino.

History

Kulturní dům Radost, originally known as Kino Radost, was designed as one of the principal cultural institutions of the newly established city of Havířov. The building, constructed in the socialist realist style, was intended to house the city's first cinema and dance hall. On 18 December 1955, even before the building was completed, the city's foundation charter and insignia were ceremonially handed over within its walls. The cinema officially opened and its first screening was the film 'Rudá záře nad Kladnem'. For decades, Kino Radost served as a central entertainment venue in Havířov. The last film screening took place in June 1993, after which the cinema ceased operations. In 2003, the building was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, recognizing its architectural and historical significance as the most typical example of socialist realism in the city. Subsequently, a major reconstruction was undertaken, which was completed in July 2007. Following this renovation, the building's purpose was transformed from a cinema to a multi-purpose cultural house, and it was renamed Kulturní dům Radost. Since then, it has been managed by Městské kulturní středisko Havířov (Havířov Municipal Cultural Centre) and hosts a variety of events, including trainings, conferences, concerts, theatre performances, balls, and exhibitions. The building also includes a gallery space.
