Overview

KUKC-LD is a low-power television station serving Kansas City, Missouri, and nearby communities. The station broadcasts on digital channel 14 and is affiliated with Univision, the Spanish-language television network. It is notable for being the only Univision network affiliate in the state of Missouri and for having been the Kansas City market's only standalone Spanish-language television station before the launch of a Telemundo service on KGKC-LD in 2018. The station began broadcasting in 1989 under the call sign K29CF. Its original programming identity was tied to ValueVision, a home-shopping network. In 1996, the station moved from UHF channel 29 to channel 48 to make room for the launch of the full-power station KCWB, now known as KCWE. Following the move, it adopted the call sign K48FS and continued carrying ValueVision programming, while also airing selected children's programs during afternoon hours, including animated and family-oriented series. Equity Media Holdings acquired the station in 2004. After the acquisition was completed, the station changed its programming direction: in January 2005 it became the Kansas City market's Univision affiliate and adopted the call sign KUKC-LP, a reference to Univision Kansas City. Its programming subsequently centered on Univision's Spanish-language schedule, including network entertainment, news, sports, and other programming supplied by the network. The station later transitioned from the low-power analog-era designation KUKC-LP to the digital call sign KUKC-LD. KUKC's ownership history has included several changes. Equity Media Holdings entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in December 2008 and began divesting its television properties. KUKC was sold to SP Television in 2009, with the transaction closing in August of that year. SP Television later reached an agreement to sell the station to Media Vista Group in December 2012. In September 2023, the sale of KUKC-LD and sister station WUMN-LD in Minneapolis to Bridge News LLC was announced. The transaction was associated with investor Manoj Bhargava and was completed on March 1, 2024. The station's Univision affiliation was not included in the sale and continued separately from the ownership transfer. KUKC-LD's offices and master-control facilities are in Kansas City's Westside South area, while its transmitter is near 27th Street in the city's Western Blue Township area.

History

KUKC-LD began broadcasting in 1989 as K29CF, a low-power station associated with the ValueVision home-shopping network. Its initial UHF channel assignment was 29. In 1996, the station moved to channel 48 so that the full-power station KCWB, now KCWE, could begin operating on channel 29. After the move, the station used the call sign K48FS. Although ValueVision remained a central part of its schedule, the station also carried children's programming during afternoon hours, including shows such as The Flintstones and Mighty Max. Equity Media Holdings acquired the station in 2004. The acquisition was followed by a major change in programming identity. In January 2005, the station became the Kansas City market's Univision affiliate and changed its call sign to KUKC-LP, reflecting the station's Univision Kansas City identity. The affiliation made KUKC the market's principal standalone Spanish-language television outlet. It also established the station's long-term role as a local outlet for Univision programming and as a service for Spanish-speaking viewers in the Kansas City area. KUKC's ownership became unsettled after Equity Media Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 8, 2008. As part of the company's restructuring, its television assets were placed on the market. KUKC was sold to SP Television on June 2, 2009, and the sale closed on August 17, 2009. SP Television subsequently reached an agreement to sell the station to Media Vista Group on December 21, 2012. The Kansas City Spanish-language television landscape changed in 2018 when KGKC-LD began carrying Telemundo. Before that development, KUKC had been the market's only standalone Spanish-language television station, apart from the earlier carriage of MundoMax on a digital subchannel of KSMO-TV. KUKC nevertheless retained a distinctive statewide position as Missouri's only Univision network affiliate. In September 2023, Bridge News LLC announced an agreement to purchase KUKC-LD and sister station WUMN-LD in Minneapolis. The transaction was associated with entrepreneur and investor Manoj Bhargava. The sale covered the stations but not their Univision affiliations, which remained separate from the change in ownership. Completion occurred on March 1, 2024. The station's offices and master-control facilities are located on West 31st Street in Kansas City's Westside South area. Its transmitter is situated near 27th Street in the city's Western Blue Township area. The station currently operates as a low-power digital television service under the KUKC-LD call sign.
