Overview

Kuš! (pronounced "koosh!") is a comic art publisher based in Riga, Latvia, founded in 2007. It is best known for its signature pocket-sized anthology, published bimonthly, and its mini kuš! series of small-format comics. The publisher's stated aims are to popularize comics in Latvia—where the medium was practically non-existent—and to promote Latvian comics abroad. Beyond publishing, Kuš! organizes exhibitions, workshops, residencies, comic jams, and other comic-related events, and travels to international festivals to spread what it calls "the Latvian comic fever." The anthology features both Latvian and international artists, with early issues distributed free of charge. Kuš! has received numerous awards and nominations, including the 2012 Prix de la Bande Dessinée Alternative at the Angoulême International Comics Festival, multiple Eisner Award nominations, and Broken Frontier Awards. The publisher is run by editors David Schilter and Sanita Muižniece, who were inducted into the Broken Frontier Hall of Fame in 2019. Kuš! titles are available through its webshop with worldwide shipping, and in select offline retailers in Latvia.

History

Kuš! was founded in Riga, Latvia, in 2007 by David Schilter and Sanita Muižniece. The first two issues of the anthology were free editions. The publication initially came out bimonthly and featured both Latvian and foreign artists. From the start, Kuš! aimed to popularize comics in a country where the medium was practically non-existent and to promote Latvian comics abroad. The publisher received support from the Riga City Council and was sold at Narvesen and Plus punkts newsstands, as well as at the Art Academy of Latvia store and the Istaba gallery. Over the years, Kuš! expanded its activities beyond publishing to include exhibitions, workshops, residencies, comic jams, and participation in international festivals. It gained international recognition, winning the Prix de la Bande Dessinée Alternative at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2012 and receiving nominations for the Stumptown Comics Arts Awards. In 2017, kuš! #26 'dADa' was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Anthology. In 2019, the anthology won Best Ongoing Series at the Broken Frontier Awards, and editors David Schilter and Sanita Muižniece were inducted into the Broken Frontier Hall of Fame. In 2020, kuš! #34-37 were nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Anthology, and the mini kuš! series received an Ignatz Award nomination for Outstanding Series. In 2022, the anthology was nominated for Best Periodical Series at the Broken Frontier Awards, and in 2023, kuš! #42 'Scientific Facts' was nominated for an Ignatz Award for Outstanding Anthology. As of 2026, Kuš! continues to publish new issues, such as kuš! #59 'Flowers' and mini kuš! #146, with distribution through its webshop and select retailers.
