KSNW

KSNW is a television station serving Wichita and a broad portion of central and western Kansas in the United States. The station operates as an NBC affiliate and also carries Telemundo programming through a secondary service. Its signal and related stations form the Kansas State Network, commonly branded as KSN, a regional group that distributes substantially similar programming across much of Kansas and reaches portions of neighboring Nebraska and Oklahoma. KSNW is owned by Nexstar Media Group and maintains studios on North Main Street in northwest Wichita, near downtown. Its transmitter is located in rural northwestern Sedgwick County, east-southeast of Colwich. The station began broadcasting on September 1, 1955, under the call sign KARD-TV. Initially an independent station, it joined NBC on May 1, 1956, following the closure of KEDD, another Wichita-area station. In the early 1960s, changes to the federal definition of the Wichita television market helped establish a broader regional operating model. KARD-TV was acquired by Central Kansas Television and combined with stations in Great Bend, Garden City, and Oberlin. These outlets first operated under the Tri-Circle Network name and were later renamed the Kansas State Network, with KARD-TV serving as its flagship. The network's call signs were coordinated on August 16, 1982, when KARD-TV became KSNW and the other principal stations adopted the KSN-prefixed identities KSNC, KSNG, and KSNK. This change reinforced the stations' shared regional identity. Over time, KSNW's programming became the principal source for the network, while the other outlets evolved into semi-satellites carrying KSNW's network, syndicated, and news content with localized inserts and advertising. The network has historically promoted coverage reaching a substantial share of Kansas television households. KSNW has passed through several ownership groups. SJL Broadcast Management acquired the stations in 1988, followed by Lee Enterprises in 1995, Emmis Communications in 2000, Montecito Broadcast Group in 2006, and New Vision Television in 2007. LIN TV Corporation acquired New Vision's stations in 2012, and Media General acquired LIN Media in 2014. Nexstar's acquisition of Media General was completed in January 2017, placing KSNW under its current ownership and reuniting it with former Kansas State Network participant KSNF. Local news and severe-weather coverage are central to KSNW's identity. The station produces daily local newscasts for its Wichita audience and supplies programming to the wider KSN network. It has also produced newscasts for Fox affiliate KSAS-TV at different points, including a 9 p.m. broadcast. KSNW's weather operation received national attention after a 1991 tornado encounter involving a news crew and again in 2013, when station management ordered staff to shelter during a tornado threat near Wichita. The station has progressively modernized its production facilities, moving from analog broadcasting to digital transmission in 2009 and completing the transition of its local news operation to high definition during the 2010s.

KSNW first broadcast on September 1, 1955, as KARD-TV. It was the fourth television station to sign on in the Wichita–Hutchinson market and began as an independent outlet. On May 1, 1956, it affiliated with NBC after KEDD ceased operations. A regional network structure emerged in the early 1960s. After federal regulators recognized central and western Kansas as part of the Wichita market, Central Kansas Television acquired KARD-TV and combined it with KCKT in Great Bend, KGLD in Garden City, and KOMC-TV in Oberlin. The four stations initially operated as the Tri-Circle Network and subsequently became the Kansas State Network. KARD-TV served as the flagship, providing much of the network's programming. The system expanded its effective reach across Kansas and into neighboring states. On August 16, 1982, the stations received coordinated call signs: KARD-TV became KSNW, while the other principal outlets became KSNC, KSNG, and KSNK. The change supported a common KSN identity. The network later relied increasingly on KSNW for central programming and news, with the other stations operating primarily as semi-satellites carrying localized advertisements and inserts. Some former network participants, including KSNT and KSNF, eventually maintained more independent operations. Ownership changed repeatedly. SJL Broadcast Management acquired the KSN stations in 1988, Lee Enterprises purchased them in 1995, and Emmis Communications acquired most of Lee's television properties in 2000. Montecito Broadcast Group bought the stations in January 2006. New Vision Television acquired them later that year in a transaction completed in November 2007. KSNW also acquired the low-power Salina outlet K06LZ in 2008, replacing it with digital repeater KSNL-LD. LIN TV Corporation announced its acquisition of New Vision's stations in 2012. The transaction was completed in October of that year. Media General then acquired LIN Media in December 2014. Nexstar Broadcasting Group agreed to purchase Media General in 2016, and the transaction closed on January 17, 2017. KSNW consequently became part of Nexstar's national local-television portfolio. The station's news operation has historically served both Wichita and the broader KSN footprint. Although satellite stations once produced more independent local newscasts, those operations were reduced over time in favor of KSNW-produced programming and localized inserts. KSNW produced a short-lived prime-time newscast for KSAS-TV from 1997 through 1998 and resumed production of that station's 9 p.m. newscast in 2012 after a competing arrangement ended. The station also operated content for Kansas Now 22 after acquiring the regional cable channel in 2009. Severe weather has been a notable part of KSNW's public profile. In 1991, a news crew's footage of sheltering under an overpass during an approaching tornado attracted national attention, although the incident later became associated with warnings that overpasses are unsafe tornado shelters. In 2013, chief meteorologist Dave Freeman directed staff to take shelter as an EF2 tornado approached southern Wichita. KSNW modernized its technical operation through the digital transition in 2009, widescreen local news in 2010, high-definition weather and studio production in 2011, and high-definition field production and updated facilities in 2014.
