Overview
KSD, short for 'Клуб Сімейного Дозвілля' (Family Leisure Club), is a major Ukrainian publishing house and book retailer headquartered in Kharkiv. Founded in 2000 as a wholly foreign-invested subsidiary, it grew into a horizontally integrated enterprise covering publishing, wholesale, retail, and online sales. Since 2004 it has been part of the international media group Bertelsmann (Direct Group). The company publishes a broad range of genres—from detective fiction to creative albums—and is known for bringing world bestsellers to Ukrainian readers through translation licenses, as well as promoting Ukrainian authors. Its online store (ksd.ua) offers thousands of titles, a loyalty program called 'КСДкоїни', and various promotions. KSD also operates a network of branded bookstores across Ukraine. In 2017 it held a leading position in the Ukrainian book market with around 700 titles in its assortment, mainly fiction, applied, and children's literature. The publisher has faced criticism for translating foreign works from Russian rather than the original language, but has pledged to improve quality. Despite challenges, KSD remains a prominent player in Ukrainian publishing and bookselling.
History
KSD was founded in 2000 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, as a subsidiary with 100% foreign investment, initially by a Dutch company. From its inception, it focused on book publishing and distribution, quickly establishing itself as a book club. In 2004, KSD became part of the international media conglomerate Bertelsmann, specifically its Direct Group division. At that time, General Director Oleg Shpilman noted that KSD published mainly Russian-language literature, with 80% of its output in Russian and only 20% in Ukrainian. Bertelsmann's DirectGroup spokesperson Gerd Kozlowski emphasized the company's intention to leverage the language situation in Ukraine for expansion, and to use KSD as a springboard into the Russian market. In 2005, KSD established a branch in Belgorod, Russia, which soon propelled it into the top 10 leading publishers in Russia. That same year, Bertelsmann's management confirmed plans to use KSD for further entry into the Russian market. In 2007, the Russian publisher 'Bertelsmann Media Moscow AO', specializing in full-color gift books, joined the KSD group. To optimize logistics, in 2009 KSD opened a distribution center in Kharkiv and later in Belgorod. By 2009, the Russian branch served over 700,000 families. In 2017, KSD held a leading position in the Ukrainian market, with an assortment of about 700 titles, primarily fiction, applied, and children's literature, and operated a network of 65 branded bookstores. The company has faced criticism for translating foreign works from Russian rather than the original language, notably for translations of Stephen King and Elena Ferrante. After public outcry, KSD promised to correct the situation and reissue poor-quality editions with new, high-quality translations from the original languages. Today, KSD continues to be a major player in Ukrainian publishing and bookselling, with a strong online presence and loyalty program.
