Overview

Kronenschlösschen is a family-run four-star country hotel and restaurant in Hattenheim, a village in Eltville am Rhein in Germany's Rheingau wine region, about 30 minutes from Frankfurt. The building was originally erected in the mid-19th century by a Frankfurt gallery owner as a residence and exhibition house for his artists. In the 1880s Balthasar Ress acquired the property at Rheinallee 1 out of bankruptcy and opened the Hotel Ress there in 1894; the hotel remained in the Ress family for 96 years, though maintenance was eventually neglected. In 1990 Hans B. Ullrich bought the dilapidated, structurally endangered property and restored it from the ground up over two years, preserving the historic fabric while equipping the rooms and suites with modern comfort. Since 1992 the house has operated under the name Kronenschlösschen as a country hotel with an eponymous restaurant. Today it is run jointly by father and daughter Hans B. and Johanna Ullrich, with Marcus Langer as head chef. The hotel offers rooms and suites in varied styles, a private park, and a location just a few metres from the Rhine, making it a venue for weddings, exclusive events, conferences and seminars. Its wine cellar was honoured by Gault Millau with the title "Best Wine List in Germany". The restaurant Kronenschlösschen has held a Michelin star for much of its modern history: Franz Keller was head chef from 1990, followed by Patrik Kimpel in 1993, who regained a star in 2011; former sous-chef Sebastian Lühr took over in April 2013 and held the star until 2016. Since 1996 the hotel has hosted the annual Rheingau Gourmet & Wein Festival each March, drawing leading chefs and winemakers. In February 2015 the hotel joined the L'Art de Vivre Gourmet-Residenzen association.

History

The building that today houses the Kronenschlösschen was erected in the mid-19th century by a Frankfurt gallery owner as a residence and exhibition house for his artists. In the 1880s Balthasar Ress acquired the property at Rheinallee 1 out of bankruptcy and opened the Hotel Ress there in 1894. The hotel remained in the Ress family for 96 years, but over time too little was invested in its upkeep. By 1990 the property was dilapidated and at risk of collapse when Hans B. Ullrich bought it. He restored the building from the ground up over two years, carefully preserving the historic substance while fitting the rooms and suites with modern comfort. Since 1992 the house has been run under the name Kronenschlösschen as a country hotel with an eponymous restaurant. It lies on the Bundesstraße 42. In February 2015 the hotel was admitted to the L'Art de Vivre Gourmet-Residenzen association. Today it is run jointly by father and daughter Hans B. and Johanna Ullrich, with Marcus Langer as head chef. The restaurant Kronenschlösschen has a notable Michelin-star history: Franz Keller became head chef in 1990 and the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star; Patrik Kimpel succeeded him in 1993 and regained a star in 2011; former sous-chef Sebastian Lühr took over in April 2013 and held the star until 2016. Since 1996 the hotel has hosted the annual Rheingau Gourmet & Wein Festival each March, which in 2014 brought together chefs holding a total of 51 Michelin stars and 25 notable winemakers across 50 culinary events in two weeks.
