Overview

Kremayr & Scheriau is an Austrian publisher founded in 1951 by Rudolf Kremayr and Wilhelm Scheriau. It describes itself as an independent publisher for non-fiction and literature. The company is based in Vienna.

History

Kremayr & Scheriau was founded in 1951 by Rudolf Kremayr and Wilhelm Scheriau. In its early years, it was the most important licensing publisher for the then-young book club Donauland. Its first title, 'Eva Faschaunerin' by Maria Steurer, became a bestseller. The publisher quickly developed into one of the leading publishers in Austria. In 1966, Bertelsmann acquired a stake in the Donauland book club and subsequently also in Kremayr & Scheriau. During the years of Bertelsmann ownership, major successes included Hugo Portisch's 'So sah ich …' books and his 'opus magnum' 'Österreich I' and 'Österreich II', as well as Bruno Kreisky's memoirs, Hellmut Andics's 'Österreichische Jahrhundert', and bestsellers by Hans Bankl. In 1991, the Orac non-fiction publisher was taken over.
