KraussMaffei describes itself as one of the world's leading manufacturers of machinery and systems used for the production and processing of plastic and rubber. The company offers technologies in injection molding, extrusion and reaction process machinery, as well as automation, and develops solutions for the automotive, packaging, medical and construction industries, as well as for the manufacturing of electrical and electronic products and household appliances. Its history traces back to 1838, when Joseph Anton von Maffei founded the family business "Eisenwerk Hirschau" in Munich.

KraussMaffei's history traces back to 1838, when Joseph Anton von Maffei (1790-1870) founded the family business "Eisenwerk Hirschau" and acquired Munich's first machine factory at the Hirschau site in the English Garden. In 1841 the first locomotive built in Hirschau was delivered, christened "the Munich" by King Ludwig I at Anton von Maffei's request. In 1866 Georg von Krauss (1828-1906), previously employed by von Maffei, founded the rival company Krauss und Comp. on the Marsfeld in Munich. In 1867 the first locomotive from Krauss ("Landwührden") won a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris for its advanced design. In 1892 the craft company Hermann Berstorff was founded in Hanover and began producing hose machines for the rubber industry. In 1931, as a result of the global economic crisis, Krauss & Comp. took over J.A. Maffei, forming Lokomotivfabrik Krauss & Comp. - J.A. Maffei A.-G. Munich, with locomotive construction remaining the core business. In 1935 the merged company moved to the Allach site near Munich. The company states that it has gone through many changes since its founding in 1838 and that the brand stands for quality, customer focus, tradition and innovation.
