Overview
Bergman Clinics Hofgartenklinik Aschaffenburg is a specialist orthopaedic hospital in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany. It operates from a heritage-listed building at Hofgartenstraße 6 and focuses on endoprosthetics — joint replacement and related surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee. The clinic describes itself as a specialised orthopaedic facility offering individually tailored, gentle treatment approaches, using minimally invasive procedures where possible, and providing continuous specialist care from diagnosis through inpatient surgery to aftercare. It is a contractual partner of all statutory and private health insurers in Germany. The clinic's roots go back to a school building constructed between 1910 and 1912 and used from 1913 as a higher girls' school. After the school went bankrupt in 1931, the physician Friedrich Wahlig bought the property and converted it into a surgical clinic, which he led until 1962. Under his successor Günter Bredow, the first accident clinic in Aschaffenburg was established. The building was comprehensively renovated in 1988 and placed under monument protection; an administration wing and an underground operating theatre were added in 1990/91. A private investor bought the clinic in 1994 and continued it as a private patient clinic; further renovation and expansion followed in 1995/96, and additional departments were created in subsequent years. In 2007 the clinic was taken over by the Capiogroup, and in 2020 by Bergman Clinics. The clinic has 42 beds. Today the Hofgartenklinik presents itself as "specialised, family-like, experienced", combining high medical quality with a personal atmosphere. Its treatment spectrum covers the hip, shoulder and knee, with named specialist physicians for each area. The clinic runs a regular Tuesday lecture series on orthopaedic topics such as shoulder pain, knee osteoarthritis, hip and knee replacement, and osteoporosis, and maintains a certified quality management system (DIN EN ISO 9001:2015). It also operates an affiliated MVZ (medical care centre) that supports the continuous physician–patient relationship across pre-examination, surgery and follow-up.
History
The building that houses the Hofgartenklinik was constructed between 1910 and 1912 at Hofgartenstraße 6 in Aschaffenburg. From 1913 it served as a higher girls' school run by the Töchterschulverein, with Georg Kunkel as its first director. The school went bankrupt in 1931, and the physician Friedrich Wahlig (1902–1967) purchased the property, converting it into a surgical clinic. Wahlig led the institution until 1962, when Günter Bredow took over. Under Bredow's leadership, the first accident clinic in Aschaffenburg was established. After a comprehensive renovation in 1988, the building was placed under monument protection. In 1990/91 an administration wing and an underground operating theatre were added. In 1994 a private investor bought the clinic and continued it as a private patient clinic (Belegklinik). The building was completely renovated and expanded again in 1995/96, and several new departments were created in the following years. In 2007 the clinic was acquired by the Capiogroup, and in 2020 by Bergman Clinics. The clinic has 42 beds. Today the Hofgartenklinik operates as a specialised orthopaedic clinic within the Bergman Clinics group, focusing on endoprosthetics of the shoulder, hip and knee. It emphasises continuous specialist care from diagnosis through inpatient surgery to aftercare, supported by an affiliated MVZ. The clinic maintains a certified quality management system (DIN EN ISO 9001:2015) and runs a public lecture series on orthopaedic topics.
