Overview

Krakowski Holding Komunalny Spółka Akcyjna (KHK S.A.) is a joint-stock holding company wholly owned by the Municipality of Kraków (Gmina Miejska Kraków). It was registered on 25 October 1996, when the city contributed shares and interests in its communal companies into the new holding. The creation of the holding followed a concept developed on the initiative of the Kraków city council and city board for the tax activities of a capital group of Kraków communal companies. The company functions as the city's communal holding structure. Its subsidiaries include Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej S.A. (MPEC, municipal district heating), Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne S.A. (MPK, municipal public transport), Wodociągi Miasta Krakowa S.A. (water supply and sewerage, formerly MPWiK), and Arena Kraków S.A. (formerly Agencja Rozwoju Miasta S.A.). KHK holds a direct 100% interest in the capital of the remaining companies. Beyond its holding role, KHK took responsibility for the design, construction and operation of the Zakład Termicznego Przekształcania Odpadów (Thermal Waste Treatment Plant) in Kraków, under Kraków city council resolution No. LVI/710/08 of 2008. The plant was commissioned in June 2016, and KHK supervised its construction and assumed responsibility for its operation. The official website highlights both the holding company and the Thermal Waste Treatment Plant. Governance is exercised through a supervisory board of up to six members, appointed and dismissed by the general meeting. In November 2024 Bogusław Kośmider became president of the management board. The KHK S.A. capital group has been classified in the "Rzeczpospolita" daily's ranking of the 500 largest enterprises in Poland; its sales revenue was reported at PLN 2,971 million for 2023 and PLN 3,246 million for 2024, and it employed 4,780 people as of May 2025. Employees have included Szczęsny Filipiak (as advisor to the KHK president) and Rafał Kudas (as management board member for product).

History

Krakowski Holding Komunalny Spółka Akcyjna was registered on 25 October 1996 by the District Court for Kraków Śródmieście, when the Municipality of Kraków contributed shares and interests in its communal companies into the new holding. The creation of the holding was intended to follow a concept developed on the initiative of the Kraków city council and city board for the tax activities of a capital group of Kraków communal companies. On 27 September 1999, the subsidiaries of Krakowski Holding Komunalny signed an agreement extending the operation of the tax capital group until the end of 2009; this was later extended to the end of 2019. In September 2017 the tax capital group composed of Krakowski Holding Komunalny and its subsidiaries was dissolved and replaced by a new one, to which, in addition to the companies previously in the tax capital group, the Agencja Rozwoju Miasta (City Development Agency) was added. The tax capital group began operating in its new composition on 1 January 2018. Under resolution No. LVI/710/08 of the Kraków city council (2008), Krakowski Holding Komunalny took responsibility for the design, construction and operation of the Zakład Termicznego Przekształcania Odpadów (Thermal Waste Treatment Plant) in Kraków. KHK was to determine the plant's location, prepare the initial construction concept and architectural design, acquire land for construction, and conduct public consultations. The waste incineration plant was commissioned in June 2016. Krakowski Holding Komunalny supervised the construction process and took responsibility for operating the plant. Krakowski Holding Komunalny holds a direct 100% interest in the capital of the remaining companies.
