Overview
Kröswang is an Austrian food wholesaler headquartered in Grieskirchen, Upper Austria. The company supplies restaurants, hotels and large kitchens (gastronomy, hotellerie and communal catering) in Austria and Southern Germany with fresh and frozen food. It is unusual among Austrian food wholesalers in that it operates no cash-and-carry pickup markets; instead it delivers exclusively to its customers. According to its own figures it serves more than 13,000 customers. The business traces its roots to the Klausmayrhof, a traditional Upper Austrian four-sided farmstead that has been in the family since 1762. In the 1960s the founder, Manfred Kröswang sen., built up a chicken-fattening operation alongside the farm, and in 1974 he entered food wholesaling through a distribution cooperation with Rudolf Ölz. Chicken fattening and slaughtering were discontinued in the 1980s, and the business focused entirely on wholesale, expanding its range to include eggs, French fries and early frozen products such as fish, vegetables and ice cream. Kröswang GmbH was founded in 1984, and Manfred Kröswang has been in the management since 2002. The assortment covers roughly 2,500 to 3,100 articles, including meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables, salads, delicatessen, convenience products, desserts, bread, baked goods, dairy products, fats and oils. The company positions itself on freshness and delivery reliability, stating that it delivers fresh food within 24 hours directly from the producer to the customer's kitchen. It also markets an exclusive own brand, EISLIEBE, for ice cream. In the 2018 financial year Kröswang reported revenue of EUR 214.8 million and employed 410 staff at 11 locations. The company is a family business and remains privately held.
History
The origins of Kröswang lie in the Klausmayrhof, a traditional Upper Austrian four-sided farmstead (Vierkanthof) in Grieskirchen that has been owned by the family since 1762. In the 1960s the company founder, Manfred Kröswang sen., established a chicken-fattening operation alongside the agricultural business. In 1974, through a distribution cooperation with Rudolf Ölz, he entered the food wholesale trade. During the 1980s chicken fattening and slaughtering were discontinued entirely, and the business concentrated exclusively on wholesale. The product range was expanded to include eggs, French fries and initial frozen products such as fish, vegetables and ice cream. In 1984 Kröswang GmbH was founded. Since 2002 Manfred Kröswang has been part of the management. The company grew into a nationwide Austrian food wholesaler with additional locations in Southern Germany, and by the 2018 financial year it reported revenue of EUR 214.8 million with 410 employees at 11 locations, serving more than 13,000 customers. It remains a family-owned business and is the only Austria-wide food wholesaler that does not operate cash-and-carry markets, relying solely on delivery.
