Overview

Kovinarska koča v Krmi is a mountain hut (planinska postojanka) situated at 870 metres on the edge of the Zasipska planina in the Krma Valley, Slovenia. It is owned and operated by the Javornik-Koroška Bela Mountaineering Society (PD Javornik-Koroška Bela), a local branch of the Alpine Association of Slovenia. The hut is named in honour of the ironworkers (kovinarji) of Jesenice who were members of the society and contributed 4,660 hours of voluntary labour to its construction. The first shelter on the site opened on 26 December 1948 in a converted shepherd's hut. In spring 1959 the society began building a larger facility, which was ceremonially opened on 19 July 1959 to mark the 90th anniversary of the Jesenice Ironworks. Over the decades the hut has been continually expanded and upgraded: a water supply with a catchment high above the hut and a veranda were added in 1963, solar cells were installed in 1994, and a connection to the public electricity and water networks was completed in 2008. The hut is typically open from mid-June to the end of September. It offers two dining rooms with 30 seats and a bar, plus 60 seats at outdoor tables. Accommodation consists of two rooms with six and two beds respectively, and communal sleeping space for 13 mountaineers. Facilities include a WC, token-operated hot showers, and a wood-fired farm stove for heating. A mobile phone is available on site. Kovinarska koča v Krmi serves as a starting point for the western approach to Triglav, though this route is less popular due to its length. The area is also suitable for winter ascents of Triglav. The hut is more commonly used for quiet excursions and walks rather than as a base for demanding mountaineering tours. Access is possible from Bled (20 km) or Mojstrana (8 km, about 2 hours on foot). Nearby destinations include Blejska koča na Lipanci, Dom Planika pod Triglavom, Dom Valentina Staniča, Triglavski dom na Kredarici, and Vodnikov dom na Velem polju.

History

The history of Kovinarska koča v Krmi begins on 26 December 1948, when the Javornik-Koroška Bela Mountaineering Society opened a first shelter in a converted shepherd's hut on the Zasipska planina in the Krma Valley. This modest postojanka served mountaineers and shepherds in the valley. In spring 1959 the society began construction of a new, larger hut. It was ceremonially opened on 19 July 1959, timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Jesenice Ironworks (Železarna Jesenice). The hut was named Kovinarska koča—'Ironworkers' Hut'—in honour of the ironworkers from Jesenice who were members of the society and who contributed 4,660 hours of voluntary shock-work (udarniško delo) to its construction. Further improvements followed. In 1963 a water supply system with a catchment located high above the hut was built, and a veranda was added. The hut was continually expanded and its equipment upgraded over the years. In 1994 solar cells were mounted on the hut, reflecting a move toward renewable energy in a remote location. In 2008 an electrical and water connection to the public grid was completed, significantly improving the hut's infrastructure. The catchment above the hut is now used only for sanitary water supply. The hut remains under the management of PD Javornik-Koroška Bela and is part of the network of mountain huts of the Alpine Association of Slovenia (Planinska zveza Slovenije). It is typically open from mid-June to the end of September. The facility includes two dining rooms with 30 seats and a bar, 60 outdoor seats, two rooms with six and two beds, communal sleeping for 13, a WC, token-operated hot showers, and a wood-fired farm stove. A mobile phone is available on site. Kovinarska koča v Krmi is a starting point for the western approach to Triglav, although the route is long and not popular. The area is also suitable for winter ascents of Triglav. The hut is described as more appropriate for a quiet excursion or walk than as a base for serious mountaineering tours. Access is from Bled (20 km) or Mojstrana (8 km, 2 hours on foot).
