History

KONSUM BERLIN was founded on 28 June 1899 as Konsumverein Berlin-Nord. The organization, renamed Konsumgenossenschaft Berlin und Umgegend eG, acquired the property at Josef-Orlopp-Straße 32-36 in Berlin-Lichtenberg in 1909. Shortly before the First World War, an administrative building was handed over there and is still used today as the company headquarters. After reconstruction in 1945, the cooperative's existence was again threatened in 2003 when effects of the financial market crisis reached it; after having to part with some very good properties, it emerged from insolvency in 2007 following efforts by the cooperative's bodies and the engagement of its employees.
