Overview

The Konstanzer Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) belonging to the Konstanz section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It is located in the Verwall group in the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg in the Austrian state of Tyrol. The hut was first opened in 1885 on the northeast side of the Fasultal valley at an elevation of 1,708 metres above sea level. After being destroyed by landslides, it was abandoned in 1988, dismantled, and rebuilt at a new site approximately 700 metres from the old location in 1989/1990. The current hut stands at 1,688 metres at the junction of the Pfluntal, Schönverwalltal and Fasultal valleys, about 4 kilometres east of the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, on the edge of a small raised bog. The hut serves as a base for hikers and mountaineers exploring the Verwall group. It is accessible from St. Anton am Arlberg via the Rosannaschlucht gorge in about 2.5 hours, from the Hotel Moserkreuz in 3 hours, and from the Salzhüttle (a hiking bus stop) in 1.25 hours. It is connected to a network of other alpine huts, including the Heilbronner Hütte, Darmstädter Hütte, Friedrichshafener Hütte, Kaltenberghütte, Wormser Hütte, and Neue Reutlinger Hütte, via marked trails and passes such as the Wannenjoch, Kuchenjoch, Schafbicheljoch, Gstansjöchl, Silbertaler Winterjöchl, and Gafluna Winterjöchl. The surrounding peaks include the Scheibler (2,978 m), Patteriol (3,056 m), Kuchenspitze (3,148 m), Küchlspitze (3,147 m), Kaltenberg (2,896 m), and others. The Konstanzer Hütte is operated by the DAV Sektion Konstanz, a non-profit mountaineering association. It is a typical alpine club hut offering accommodation and food to members and guests. The hut celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2011, as documented in an article in DAV Panorama. It remains an active and important facility for alpine tourism in the Verwall region.

History

The Konstanzer Hütte was first opened in 1885 by the Konstanz section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It was built on the northeast side of the Fasultal valley at an elevation of 1,708 metres above sea level, in what is now the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg in the Austrian state of Tyrol. The hut served as a base for mountaineers and hikers exploring the Verwall group. In 1988, the hut was destroyed by landslides. It was subsequently abandoned, dismantled, and rebuilt at a new location approximately 700 metres from the original site. The reconstruction took place in 1989 and 1990. The new hut stands at 1,688 metres above sea level, at the junction of the Pfluntal, Schönverwalltal and Fasultal valleys, about 4 kilometres east of the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, on the edge of a small raised bog. In 2011, the hut celebrated its 125th anniversary. An article by Beate Leifert and Mirjam Frede titled "125 Jahre Konstanzer Hütte – Alpinvielfalt abseits vom Skizirkus" was published in DAV Panorama (issue 1, February 2011), documenting the history and alpine diversity of the area. The hut continues to be operated by the DAV Sektion Konstanz and remains an active facility for alpine tourism.
