Overview

Konkurrent Onafhankelijk Muziekbedrijf (commonly shortened to Konkurrent) is a Dutch independent music company based in Amsterdam. Founded in 1985, it operates as a distributor, marketing and promotion house, and record label group for small independent labels. Its webshop serves customers in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, and it is known as an exclusive Benelux distributor for a large roster of independent labels. The company began as a foundation run out of a garage by Hetty Zwart, Richard van der Veen and The Ex band members Luc Klaasen and Jos Kley, initially distributing punk records one day a week. It later moved to a former school building in the Staatsliedenbuurt area of Amsterdam, was converted into a private limited company (BV) in 1992, and opened its webshop in 2012. Today Konkurrent focuses on guitar music, pop, reggae, singer-songwriter and electronic music, with well-known artists in its catalogue including Pavement, Sebadoh and Mogwai. Konkurrent is the exclusive Benelux distributor for roughly 400 record labels, among them Rough Trade, Sub Pop and Touch & Go. Through its own label Konkurrel, active between 1986 and 2004, it released around 100 albums by acts such as De Kift, Dog Faced Hermans and Victims Family. In 1996 it launched the In the Fishtank label, which invites befriended musicians to record a short CD in two days; the label has issued more than twenty releases, often collaborations between different groups.

History

Konkurrent was founded in 1985 by Hetty Zwart, Richard van der Veen and The Ex band members Luc Klaasen and Jos Kley. In 2012 a webshop was opened. Over time Konkurrent shifted its focus to guitar music, pop, reggae, singer-songwriter and electronic music, and became the exclusive Benelux distributor for around 400 record labels, including Rough Trade, Sub Pop and Touch & Go.
