History

The history of Kondotty is deeply rooted in local legend and the region's colonial-era struggles. According to tradition, the name "Kondotty" derives from "Kontu Vetti" (meaning "cut and cleared"), referring to the clearing of dense forest by local elders to build a mosque. The elders had requested land from the local landlord Thalayoor Moosath, and after gold coins were scattered and the forest cleared, the Kondotty Pazhayangadi Juma Masjid was built in the 14th century. In the late 18th century (1774), the arrival of Sufi saint Sheikh Muhammad Shah Thangal from Kalyani, Bombay, marked a turning point; he founded the Kondotty Kubba and the Kondotty Thangal lineage. The region was also active in the national and freedom movements, with many locals participating in anti-imperialist struggles, particularly the anti-occupation struggle of Eranad. The first president of Kondotty Panchayat was Kallingal Veerankutty. The Nediyiruppu Panchayat was formed in 1959. Kondotty Municipality was constituted in 2015 by merging the Kondotty and Nediyiruppu panchayats, covering an area of 10.85 square kilometres with 40 wards. It is located in Kondotty taluk, Malappuram district, Kerala. The municipality operates under the Kerala Municipality Act of 1994 and the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992, which gave constitutional status to urban local governments in India.
