History

KOMPASS Freytag & Berndt combines the strengths of two brands rich in tradition. freytag & berndt was founded in Vienna in 1885 and developed into one of the leading cartographic publishers in the German-speaking region. KOMPASS was established in 1952 as a publisher specializing in hiking and leisure maps, building a strong presence particularly in the Alpine region. During the 1960s–1980s, KOMPASS established itself as a leading provider of outdoor maps, while freytag & berndt continuously expanded its classic map portfolio. In the 1990s, the digitization of cartographic content began, alongside the development of structured datasets. In 2005, KOMPASS and freytag & berndt were integrated into the MairDumont Group, described as one of Europe's leading travel information companies. Between 2010 and 2015, digital applications, route databases, and the first online platform solutions were expanded.
