Overview

Komerční banka, commonly known as KB, is one of the principal banking institutions in the Czech Republic and the parent company of the KB Group. It was established in 1990 after the commercial-banking activities of the former State Bank of Czechoslovakia were separated. The bank was partially privatized through voucher privatization in 1992, and in 2001 Société Générale acquired the Czech state's 60% holding. KB has since operated as a member of the Société Générale international financial group while retaining a central role in the Czech banking market. KB is a universal bank. Its activities cover personal banking, services for entrepreneurs and small businesses, corporate banking, municipal and public-sector finance, and investment-banking services. Specialized products are also supplied through KB subsidiaries and other Société Générale Group companies. The resulting model combines a large domestic branch and distribution network with internet and other digital banking channels. The bank serves more than 1.6 million customers in the Czech Republic and also provides selected corporate services in Slovakia. The bank's corporate business is organized in part around client size and relationship complexity. Companies with annual turnover in the approximate range of CZK 60 million to CZK 1.5 billion are generally served through corporate sales centers, while larger enterprises are handled by Top Corporations divisions in Prague, Brno and Bratislava. This gives KB a presence across both the mass-market and institutional segments of the economy. Its core offering includes current and savings accounts, payments, cards, consumer lending, mortgages, business loans, leasing and other forms of commercial finance, cash management, trade-related services and capital-markets or investment-banking support. Digital transformation has become an important part of KB's development. In 2021 the bank announced, with implementation partner Syncordis, a transition to a Temenos banking software platform. The project was presented as a major investment intended to modernize the bank's technology base and improve the customer experience. KB has also participated in efforts to make cash access more interoperable in the Czech Republic. In 2022 it proposed cooperation among banks around a shared ATM network, initially with Moneta Money Bank; UniCredit Bank and Air Bank joined the arrangement in 2023. KB has expanded beyond traditional deposit and lending activities through acquisitions and group relationships. In 2020 it acquired 96% of Upvest, a Prague-based company founded in 2017. In March 2025 it became the sole shareholder of SG Equipment Finance Czech Republic after acquiring the remaining 49.9% stake. Alongside its commercial operations, the bank has maintained a visible social and cultural role. Its partnerships have included the National Theatre, the French Film Festival and the National Gallery in Prague. The Komerční banka Jistota Foundation supports social and health-care projects, with particular attention to children and older people. KB remains a listed Czech bank operating under the ownership and strategic umbrella of Société Générale.

History

Komerční banka was created in 1990 when the commercial activities of the former State Bank of Czechoslovakia were separated into a distinct banking institution. Its formation occurred during the transformation of the Czech financial system after the end of the communist period. In 1992, the bank was partially privatized through the Czech voucher-privatization program. The state remained an important shareholder until 2001, when Société Générale purchased the state's 60% stake. That transaction established KB as a member of the French banking group's international network. Following the change in ownership, KB broadened its emphasis beyond its established enterprise and municipal banking franchise. It significantly developed personal banking, entrepreneur services and retail distribution, while continuing to serve large companies and public-sector institutions. The bank evolved into a universal financial group whose banking products were complemented by specialized services from KB subsidiaries and other Société Générale companies. KB's distribution model has combined physical and digital channels. Its branches, proprietary distribution network, internet banking and other electronic services have supported a customer base of more than 1.6 million people. Corporate clients have generally been divided according to turnover, product usage and complexity. Corporate sales centers serve many mid-sized companies, while Top Corporations divisions in Prague, Brno and Bratislava focus on larger enterprises, including companies operating across the Czech-Slovak market. The bank has also developed activities outside conventional deposit and lending products. In 2020 it acquired 96% of Upvest, a Prague-based business founded in 2017. In January 2021, KB announced a technology modernization project with Syncordis involving a transition to a Temenos banking platform. The initiative was intended to support the digitization of banking services and improve customer experience. In 2021 the bank operated 241 branches and 857 ATMs, according to the reference material. In 2022 KB promoted a shared ATM-network model in the Czech Republic. The initial arrangement involved KB and Moneta Money Bank, with UniCredit Bank and Air Bank joining in February 2023. The initiative sought to reduce duplication in cash infrastructure and give participating customers broader access to ATMs without additional fees. The bank has maintained a long-running sponsorship and community role. Its cultural partnerships have included the National Theatre, the French Film Festival and, from 2014, the National Gallery in Prague. The Komerční banka Jistota Foundation has supported social and health-care projects, especially those concerning children and older people. In March 2025 KB acquired the remaining 49.9% of SG Equipment Finance Czech Republic, becoming its sole shareholder. KB therefore combines a long-established domestic banking franchise with Société Générale ownership, specialized financial subsidiaries and continuing investment in technology and distribution.
