Overview
АО «Колыванский камнерезный завод им. И.И. Ползунова» (Kolyvan Stone Cutting Factory) is described on its official site as the first stone-cutting center of Siberia, with more than 200 years of history and over 900 significant works produced. It was built in 1802 in a factory settlement on the site of a former Demidov dynasty copper smelting plant. The factory is located in Kolyvan, Altai Krai, Russia, and its products have been associated with the Imperial court and diplomatic gifts.
History
The enterprise, originally called a grinding factory (шлифовальная фабрика), was built in a factory settlement in 1802 on the site of a copper smelting plant of the Demidov dynasty that had ceased copper smelting and passed in the second half of the 18th century into the ownership of the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty. It was the third and last such factory after the Peterhof and Yekaterinburg factories in the Russian Federation, but differed fundamentally in that water power was first applied at Kolyvan for mechanical stone processing. The factory pond, which had driven mechanisms supplying oxygen to copper smelting furnaces, was used to drive a water wheel more than 5 meters in diameter, from which mechanical energy was transmitted via belt-and-pulley transmission to hand grinding machines. The project of the new mechanized grinding factory was developed and implemented by Filipp Vasilyevich Strizhkov, son of a craftsman of the Altai copper smelting plants. Strizhkov, a mechanic, inventor, artist, stone-cutting master, and excellent organizer, built the grinding factory in two years (1801–1802) and directed it for ten years. His invention accelerated stone processing several times compared to the Peterhof and Yekaterinburg factories and allowed Kolyvan masters to carve large items. Over the existence of the factory, more than 900 significant works were produced, most of which have survived. In the catalog of the State St. Petersburg Hermitage alone there are 89 vases, torchères, bowls, 4 cameos, including the famous unsurpassed oval «Царица ваз» (Queen of Vases).
