Overview

The Kolozsvár Society (Hungarian: Kolozsvár Társaság; Esperanto: Societo Kolozsvár) is a nonprofit, non-governmental and apolitical civil association based in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), Romania. It was launched as a civil initiative in October 2002 under the motto "Kolozsvárért, jövőnkért" (For Kolozsvár, for our future) by a group of local intellectuals, and was formally registered in 2003 under the name Kolozsvár Társaság. Its stated purpose is to support the successful presence of the city's Hungarian population in its economic, social and cultural life. The initiative was started by Horváth Andor, Jakab Gábor, Kántor Lajos, László Ferenc, Salat Levente, Tibád Zoltán, Tibori Szabó Zoltán, Vetési László and Visky András. The society has been led by a series of presidents: László Vetési (2003–2006), Lajos Kántor (2006–2017), Péter Buchwald (2017–2022) and Zsolt Szabó (2022–). The Society operates as a cultural and community platform rather than a commercial enterprise. Its website organizes activities around events, exhibitions, book launches and conversations, and it maintains directories of notable Kolozsvár figures across many fields — church figures, performing artists, photographers, writers, visual artists, doctors, politicians, athletes, teachers, scientists (including members of EME), professionals, media professionals and alumni. It also lists partner sites and venues, including the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, the Hungarian Opera, the Apáczai Gallery, the Ars Sacra Gallery, the BMC headquarters, the Fehér Gallery, the Györkös Mányi Albert Memorial House, the Hungarian Consulate General in Cluj, the Minerva Art Museum, the Tailors' Bastion, the House of Religious Freedom, the Quadró Gallery, the Refectory, the EME headquarters, the Korunk Gallery, the Sapientia EMTE Bocskai House, the Óváry Room, the Kányafő Gallery, the Bánffy Miklós Opera Studio and the Platinia Shopping Center. As a registered association, the Kolozsvár Society is a private, nonprofit entity. It publishes documents and publications, maintains a board (Vezetőség), lists award recipients (Díjazottak), and acknowledges its supporters (Támogatóink). Its activities are concentrated in Cluj-Napoca and the surrounding Hungarian-speaking cultural network of Transylvania.
