Overview
Koča na Gozdu is a mountain hut and guesthouse located along the road to the Vršič mountain pass, about 8 km from Kranjska Gora in northwestern Slovenia. It sits at an elevation of 1,226 metres above sea level and is operated by the company PREZLC d.o.o., which is based in Gozd Martuljek. The hut offers accommodation, traditional Slovenian cuisine and facilities for outdoor activities, and it is marketed as a destination for families, school groups, kindergartens and individual travellers. The original Koča na Gozdu was inaugurated on 2 July 1922 and operated until it was closed in 1979. A new, larger and more modern hut was built on the same site and opened on 24 May 1986. The current building provides 54 beds across three floors: the first floor has four rooms with private bathrooms for 3–6 people, the second floor has four rooms with shared bathrooms for 4–8 people, and the third floor offers shared dormitory accommodation for up to 12 people. There is a large dining room that can also be used for workshops and lectures. The kitchen serves homemade Slovenian dishes such as štruklji, gorenjski krapi, one-pot stews and blueberry strudel, as well as game specialities including venison roast and venison goulash. The surrounding grassy areas are suitable for sports and outdoor lectures, and the hut welcomes children's groups, school trips in nature and mountaineering clubs. In 2013 the hut received the "Družinam prijazna koča" (Family-Friendly Hut) designation awarded by the Alpine Association of Slovenia. The hut is surrounded by greenery and larch trees and is a base for hikes in the Julian Alps, including routes to Prisojnik and nearby huts such as Mihov dom and Erjavec's hut on the Vršič pass.
