Overview
Kneipenbühne (short: Knopf, for Kneipenbühne Oberpfalz) is a small live arts venue in the village of Oberweiling, part of Velburg in Bavaria, Germany. It was opened in September 1981 by members of a Nuremberg flat-share who had bought the old village schoolhouse at Pfarrweg 6. Since February 1982 the non-profit cultural association Projekt Film & Kunst e. V. has been the cultural sponsor of the venue; it was founded by the owners and today has more than 100 members. Of the original founders, the musician Roland "Golly" Hertlein and his wife Hanne are still active. The venue began as a Kleinkunstbühne (small-stage cabaret and live music venue) with an attached film-screening space and a recording studio. It hosts concerts, cabaret, literary events and film screenings, mostly on Saturday evenings, with admission usually at the door and cash payment only. Over the decades it has presented artists who later became widely known, including Ralf Huwendiek, Wolfgang Haffner, Ottfried Fischer, Bernd Schütz, Horst W. Blome, Uwe Kropinski, Argile, Freddy Freeloader Group, Gabi Lodermeier and Bernd Regenauer. In 1988 Golly Hertlein founded the associated Knopfstudio recording studio, and for three years the venue published a programme booklet called "Der Knopf". In autumn 2009 the Kneipenbühne received the Kulturpreis des Bezirks Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate District Cultural Prize) in the small-stage category. On 20 November 2010 the 1,000th concert was held there, with Hertlein performing with his band Breeze the Creaze. The 30th-anniversary celebration in 2011 took place in the Reitstadel, hosted by Lizzy Aumeier. The venue continues to programme events, including a 2026 season with Julie & The Banned, Kellner/Raith and Andi Blaimer, and it also maintains a holiday flat used for band residencies and a sculpture-restoration project on the old schoolhouse.
History
The Kneipenbühne (short: Knopf, for Kneipenbühne Oberpfalz) is a live arts venue in the village of Oberweiling, part of Velburg in Bavaria, Germany. It was created after a Nuremberg flat-share of six men and three women bought the old village schoolhouse at Pfarrweg 6 in July 1981; the building had been used as a school until 1968. From the outset the plan was to create a small-stage venue for live events and film screenings, together with a recording studio. The project was initially called Grundkunstbühne, but five of the original nine members left soon after. A previous owner had already failed with a concept called "Künstlerklause". The remaining members of the Nuremberg flat-share, among them Hanne and Roland Hertlein, opened the Kneipenbühne in September 1981. In February 1982 the non-profit cultural association Projekt Film & Kunst e. V. was founded; it began with ten founding members and today has more than 100. In 1988 Golly Hertlein founded the associated recording studio, Knopfstudio. For three years the venue also published a programme booklet called "Der Knopf". From its early years the venue hosted artists who were or became known far beyond the region, including Ralf Huwendiek, Wolfgang Haffner, Ottfried Fischer, Bernd Schütz, Horst W. Blome, Uwe Kropinski, Argile, Freddy Freeloader Group, Gabi Lodermeier and Bernd Regenauer. After the turn of the millennium, only Hanne and Roland Hertlein remained of the original Nuremberg group. In autumn 2009 the Kneipenbühne was awarded the Kulturpreis des Bezirks Oberpfalz in the small-stage category. On 20 November 2010 the 1,000th concert took place, with Hertlein performing with his band Breeze the Creaze. The 30th-anniversary celebration in 2011 was held in the Reitstadel, hosted by Lizzy Aumeier, who also gave the laudation. The venue has continued to operate, with a 2026 programme including Julie & The Banned, Kellner/Raith and Andi Blaimer, and it also runs a holiday flat used for band residencies and a sculpture-restoration project on the old schoolhouse.
