Overview
KMC Amba is a Danish cooperative owned by Danish starch-potato farmers, dedicated to developing, producing, and exporting potato-based ingredients for the global food industry. Founded in 1933 as "Kartoffelmelcentralen," the company was established by the Danish state to sell the combined production of seven potato starch factories. Over more than 90 years, KMC has evolved from selling potato starch primarily in Denmark to exporting over 90 percent of its production to more than 90 countries. The cooperative structure ensures strict monitoring and high-quality, disease-free Danish starch potatoes. KMC offers more than 60 different potato-based products, serving industries such as cheese, confectionery, bakery, dressings, soups and sauces, pasta and noodles, snacks, protein fortification, and feed and pet food. The company emphasizes sustainability and circular economy principles, positioning itself as a reliable partner for food manufacturers worldwide.
History
KMC Amba was founded in 1933 as "Kartoffelmelcentralen" (the Potato Flour Central) by the Danish state, which decided that Denmark should produce its own potato starch. The cooperative was given the task of selling the combined production of seven Danish potato starch factories that had been granted a concession. For decades, KMC focused on selling potato starch, primarily in Denmark. In 1988, the company established a development department to improve existing products and develop new ones. During the 1990s, KMC shifted its focus toward products for the food industry, which opened new opportunities. In 2003, KMC built a new factory for the production of granules and flakes. From originally selling exclusively potato starch, KMC now offers more than 60 different potato-based products. The company has grown from mainly selling in Denmark to exporting more than 90 percent of its production to over 90 countries. In 1990, KMC began extracting protein from potato fruit water, further diversifying its product range. Today, KMC is a cooperative owned by Danish starch-potato farmers, with 295 employees, and remains committed to sustainable growth and circular economy principles.
