Overview
Klub Starý pivovar ("Old Brewery Club") is a cultural center and club located in a heritage-protected former brewery building in Kroměříž, Czech Republic. The building stands within the town's municipal heritage reserve, near the town hall on Prusinovského Street. It is listed on Wikidata as a cultural center in an old brewery. The club's main space is a charismatic theatrical hall with a wooden balcony, used for theatre performances, concerts by smaller ensembles and orchestras, and literary programs. Several times a year it hosts exhibitions and competitions for amateur filmmakers and audio enthusiasts, and it also serves as a meeting place for hobby groups. The venue includes a main theatre hall of 130 m² with 120 seats and an adjoining hall of 70 m² with 50 seats. The building itself dates to the late 16th century, when it was built by the owners of Kroměříž's tap houses as a brewery next to the town hall. Brewing rights in Kroměříž are roughly as old as the town itself; in the 16th century, between 1540 and 1567, eight so-called "nákladnické" houses held the right to brew beer on their own coppers and supply it to tap houses. At the end of the 16th century these scattered houses combined and built a common brewery in what was then Pivovarská Street. The brewery belonged to the brewing burghers, who had a prescribed number of brews made there and then tapped the beer at home. When this innkeeping system gradually died out, the town took over the brewery and continued brewing there for some time. Beer has long since ceased to be brewed in the building. Today the club operates as a municipal cultural venue rather than a commercial brewery. Its official information page is hosted on the MojeKroměříž.cz portal. The club is a local institution serving the cultural life of Kroměříž, with a focus on theatre, music, and community activities.
History
The building that now houses Klub Starý pivovar was constructed at the end of the 16th century by the owners of Kroměříž's tap houses, who built a brewery in the immediate vicinity of the town hall. Brewing rights in Kroměříž are roughly as old as the town itself. In the 16th century, between 1540 and 1567, there were eight so-called "nákladnické" houses in Kroměříž that held the right to brew beer on their own coppers and supply it to tap houses — that is, to most houses on the square and adjacent streets. The tap houses could serve beer in their "mázauzy" (wide ground-floor corridors) when their turn came, which happened several times a year. The nákladnické right was maintained longest at the house where Hotel Haná now stands. At the end of the 16th century, the scattered houses combined and built a common brewery next to the town hall, in a street then called Pivovarská. The brewery belonged to the brewing burghers, who had a prescribed number of brews made there and then tapped the beer at home. Beer tasters, called "pivokoštéři" or "lízníci," sampled the beers before they were brought to be tapped. When this innkeeping system gradually died out, the town appropriated the brewery and continued brewing there for some time. The building is now heritage-protected and belongs to the municipal heritage reserve of Kroměříž. A plaque on the house (Prusinovského no. 114, text by Jindřich Spáčil) commemorates its history. Beer has long since ceased to be brewed there. The building has been repurposed as a cultural center and club, known as Klub Starý pivovar. Its main space is a theatrical hall with a wooden balcony, suitable for theatre performances, concerts by smaller ensembles and orchestras, and literary programs. Several times a year it hosts exhibitions and competitions for amateur filmmakers and audio enthusiasts, and it also serves as a meeting place for hobby groups. The venue has a main theatre hall of 130 m² with 120 seats and an adjoining hall of 70 m² with 50 seats. The club's official information page is hosted on the MojeKroměříž.cz portal.
