Overview
Klub Jagielloński (the Jagiellonian Club) is a Polish non-partisan, Christian-democratic political association and think-tank founded in 1989 in Kraków, shortly after the Round Table talks. It describes itself as a non-party Christian-democratic political environment seeking constitutional, economic and social solutions serving the integral development of the human person. Its portal develops the idea of a "New Christian Democracy" built on three pillars: republicanism, conservatism and Catholic social teaching. The organisation traces its origins to a group of Jagiellonian University students who in March 1988 collected signatures defending a university vice-rector, and who in spring 1989 decided to form a student academic circle, soon becoming the Studencki Klub Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. It gained legal personality on 12 May 1994, with Arkady Rzegocki as its first president. Until 2006 its activity centred on publishing its journal and organising debates and seminars; from 2006 it added educational projects and expert work. In 2002 the first issue of its quarterly "Pressje" appeared. In 2013 it launched the jagiellonski24.pl portal, and in 2015 the Centrum Analiz Klubu Jagiellońskiego (CAKJ) think-tank. Its Academy of Modern Patriotism, begun in 2009, reached all 16 voivodeships by 2015. It has permanent offices in Kraków (Rynek Główny 34) and Warsaw (ul. Andersa 35), plus branches in Katowice, Wrocław, Poznań and Gdańsk. The Club's expert work is conducted through CAKJ, which gathers several dozen experts in thematic teams covering the constitution, administration, public finance, economy, science and innovation, education, energy, transport, diplomacy and security, maritime policy, social insurance, family policy, housing, agriculture and health care. Its publicistic portal klubjagiellonski.pl (formerly J24) is edited by Piotr Kaszczyszyn. Its semi-annual journal "Pressje" has been published since 2002. The Club also runs a YouTube channel and four podcasts, and it developed the Pola mobile app promoting consumer patriotism. It is funded partly by public support such as the 1.5% personal income tax designation (KRS 0000128315). It has received recognition including a flag from President Bronisław Komorowski in 2015, and its president Krzysztof Mazur was appointed to the National Development Council by President Andrzej Duda in October 2015. Honorary members have included figures such as Antoni Dudek, Jadwiga Emilewicz, Jarosław Gowin, Ryszard Legutko, Krzysztof Szczerski and the late Józef Tischner.
History
The first actions of what became Klub Jagielloński were initiated by a group of Jagiellonian University students in March 1988, still without an official name, collecting signatures in defence of the university's vice-rector Prof. Stanisław Grodziski. In spring 1989 the decision was made to form an academic circle at the Kraków university. A few weeks later the Studencki Klub Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego (Student Club of the Jagiellonian University) was created. On 12 May 1994 the Club obtained legal personality. Arkady Rzegocki became its first president. Around 1996–1997 members organised a series of debates ahead of the adoption of the Polish constitution. In 2002 the first issue (teka) of "Pressje", the Club's quarterly, was published under the title "Dlaczego w Polsce nie ma Uniwersytetu?" (Why is there no University in Poland?). Until 2006 the Club's activity focused on publishing the journal and organising debates, discussion meetings and thematic seminars. From 2006 it began conducting educational projects and expert work. From 2009 it ran the Academy of Modern Patriotism (initially called the Academy of Mature Citizens), which by 2015 covered all 16 voivodeships. In 2013 the jagiellonski24.pl portal was launched, and in 2015 the Centrum Analiz Klubu Jagiellońskiego (CAKJ) think-tank was established. Since 2005 the Club has had its own seat in Kraków (currently at Rynek Główny 34), and since October 2014 a seat in Warsaw (currently at ul. Andersa 35). On the occasion of Polish Flag Day, 2 May 2015, President Bronisław Komorowski presented the Club with a flag awarded in recognition of its activities for the good of the Republic. In October 2015 President Andrzej Duda appointed the Club's president Krzysztof Mazur to the National Development Council. The Club currently has two central offices (Kraków and Warsaw) and branches in Katowice, Wrocław, Poznań and Gdańsk, where regular expert and formative meetings and lectures take place, along with local social and educational projects and work on nationwide projects. Its main nationwide projects include CAKJ, a think-tank gathering several dozen experts divided into thematic teams addressing the constitution, administration, public finance, economy, science and innovation, education, energy, transport, diplomacy and security, maritime policy, social insurance, family policy, housing, agriculture and health care. The publicistic portal klubjagiellonski.pl (formerly J24) appeared online in August 2013. The semi-annual "Pressje" is an intellectual socio-cultural journal created by the environment around the Club; by October 2024, 64 issues had appeared. Its editors-in-chief have been, successively, Arkady Rzegocki, Paweł Rojek (from 2011), Jan Maciejewski (from 2014), Piotr Kaszczyszyn (from 2018) and Konstanty Pilawa (from 2021). The Pola app, launched in November 2015, promotes consumer patriotism by scanning barcodes to display a producer rating based on Polish capital share, registration and production location, R&D job creation in Poland, and membership in a foreign concern; by February 2016 it had been installed 80,000 times and used to scan over 1,000,000 barcodes.
