The Klosterneuburger Hütte is a private mountain hut (Schutzhütte) situated at 1,902 metres above sea level in the Wölzer Tauern range of the Styrian Alps, Austria. It lies between the Tauernwindpark wind farm and the Lachtal ski area, in the municipality of Schönberg-Lachtal, on the eastern side of the Schönberg (1,943 m), just below its summit. The hut was built in 1929/30 by the Klosterneuburg group of the Austrian Mountain Association (Österreichischer Gebirgsverein) within the German and Austrian Alpine Club. As an Alpine Club hut, it last offered, according to its website, 24 room beds and 20 places in a mattress dormitory. In June 2009 the house was sold by the Austrian Mountain Association of the Austrian Alpine Club and has since been in private ownership. Since July 2014 the hut has been open year-round again. The hut is a destination for hikers in summer and skiers in winter, accessible via several marked trails from the surrounding valleys, including from Lachtal (1 hour), Zeiringgraben (2 hours), Pusterwald (3 hours) and Oberzeiring (4 hours). A private toll road from Oberzeiring allows vehicle access from early April to the end of October. In winter, skiers can reach it using a drag lift from Lachtal. The hut also serves as a base for nearby summits such as the Hoher Zinken (2,222 m), Schießeck (2,275 m), Steineck (2,260 m) and Hühnerkogel (2,242 m), and for transitions to neighbouring huts including the Bruckerhütte, Plannerhütte and Lachtalhaus.
History
The Klosterneuburger Hütte was built in 1929/30 by the Klosterneuburg group of the Austrian Mountain Association (Österreichischer Gebirgsverein) within the German and Austrian Alpine Club (Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein). It served as an Alpine Club hut for decades, providing shelter and accommodation for mountaineers in the Wölzer Tauern. According to its website, it last offered 24 room beds and 20 places in a mattress dormitory. In June 2009, the hut was sold by the Austrian Mountain Association of the Austrian Alpine Club and has since been privately owned. After the sale, the hut continued to operate, and since July 2014 it has been open year-round again. The hut is located between the Tauernwindpark wind farm and the Lachtal ski area, in the municipality of Schönberg-Lachtal, on the eastern side of the Schönberg (1,943 m), just below the summit. It is accessible via several hiking trails: through the Zeiringgraben (2 hours), from Lachtal (1 hour), from Oberzeiring (4 hours), and from Pusterwald (3 hours). A private toll road from Oberzeiring, 13.4 km long via the paved 'Höhenstraße' (Mitterlerer Karleiten Weg and Oberer Höhenweg), becomes a toll-paying private road with an automated barrier at a certain altitude and is passable from early April to the end of October. By car it takes 30 minutes; by bicycle 2 hours uphill and 1:15 hours downhill; on foot 3:45 hours up and 3:00 hours down. In winter, skiers can reach it using a drag lift from Lachtal. The hut serves as a base for nearby summits: Hoher Zinken (2,222 m, 1 hour), Schießeck (2,275 m, 1 hour), Steineck (2,260 m, 3 hours), and Hühnerkogel (2,242 m, 3 hours). Transitions to neighbouring huts include Bruckerhütte (1,605 m, 1 hour), Plannerhütte (1,540 m, 13 hours), Lachtalhaus (1,570 m, 1 hour), and Oberzeiring (932 m) via Hirzeck (1,836 m, 3 hours).
