Overview
Klinikum Crailsheim is a hospital of basic and standard care (Grund- und Regelversorgung) located in Crailsheim in the district of Schwäbisch Hall, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was opened on 1 July 1878 as Bezirkskrankenhaus Crailsheim and was later known as Kreiskrankenhaus Crailsheim before adopting its current name. The hospital is owned by the district of Schwäbisch Hall and serves the local population with a broad range of medical specialties. The hospital's departments include anaesthesia and intensive care, general and visceral surgery with vascular surgery, orthopaedics and joint surgery, internal medicine with cardiology, gastroenterology and geriatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, and ear, nose and throat medicine. It also operates a central emergency department, a nursing service and a therapy centre. The facility has 165 planned beds. Over the decades the buildings have been repeatedly expanded and modernised. Following a decision by the district council in 2010, a new building was constructed and completed in 2016 with an investment volume of 54 million euros. From 2021 to 2026, an extension funded by the state added a women's clinic, acute geriatrics, additional bed wards and a rooftop helipad. Since 2008 the hospital has cooperated with the Diak Klinikum Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall; after the district took over the Diak Klinikum Schwäbisch Hall in 2025, both hospitals received a joint management. Klinikum Crailsheim presents itself as a patient-focused local hospital emphasising professional competence, good care and accessibility, with information on inpatient and outpatient treatment, careers, events and a patient portal on its website.
History
Klinikum Crailsheim was opened on 1 July 1878 as Bezirkskrankenhaus Crailsheim. At the time it served as a district hospital for the surrounding area. In the course of its history it was also known as Kreiskrankenhaus Crailsheim before taking its present name. Over the decades the hospital buildings were continually expanded and modernised to meet growing demand and changing medical standards. In 2008 a cooperation agreement was established with the Diak Klinikum Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall, linking the two hospitals in the district. In 2010 the Kreistag (district council) of the Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall decided to build a new hospital building. Construction took place until 2016 and represented an investment volume of 54 million euros. This new building modernised the core facilities of the hospital. From 2021 to 2026, the hospital was extended by an annex that was also supported by state funding. This extension added the Frauenklinik (women's clinic), acute geriatrics, additional bed wards and a helipad on the roof. In 2025 the Landkreis Schwäbisch Hall took over the Diak Klinikum Schwäbisch Hall, which is classified as a Schwerpunktversorger (specialised care provider). As a result, both hospitals received a joint management, further integrating hospital care in the district. Today Klinikum Crailsheim operates as a hospital of basic and standard care with 165 planned beds across departments including surgery, orthopaedics, internal medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics, and ear, nose and throat medicine.
