Overview

Klinikum am Plattenwald is an acute-care hospital in Bad Friedrichshall, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is the second-largest hospital within the SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn GmbH group, a municipal healthcare provider serving the city and district of Heilbronn. The hospital operates approximately 400 beds in a modern building and offers specialized care in orthopedics and trauma surgery, cardiology, general, vascular and endovascular surgery, gastroenterology, and geriatrics. It serves the Heilbronn-Franken region and, for certain specialties, patients from beyond the region. The hospital's history dates back to a 1962 decision by the Heilbronn district council to build a district hospital at Plattenwald. Construction began in 1974, and the hospital opened on 1 July 1977 with 447 beds, replacing the Städtisches Krankenhaus Neckarsulm. In 2003 it was renamed Klinikum am Plattenwald, and since January 2001 it has been part of the SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn GmbH group. A major new building was constructed between 2012 and 2016, a seven-story structure with about 350 patient beds, seven operating rooms including a hybrid OR, and a total area of 49,000 square meters. The new building was inaugurated on 13 May 2016 at a cost of 140 million euros, and patients and staff moved in on 4 June 2016. In 2018, a reserve floor was converted to add 71 beds in anticipation of the closure of the Möckmühl hospital, and demolition of the old building began. As of 2016, the hospital had around 390 beds, treated more than 17,100 inpatients and 32,000 outpatients annually, and employed over 950 staff. It houses seven clinics and two centers, including a certified endoprosthesis center that implants more than 1,200 joint prostheses per year, a regional vascular center with 60 beds, and a geriatric center. The hospital is part of the SLK group's network of three acute-care hospitals, a geriatric rehabilitation clinic, and outpatient health centers.

History

The history of Klinikum am Plattenwald begins in 1962, when the Heilbronn district council decided to build a district hospital for basic and standard care at Plattenwald. In March 1974, the council selected the future chief physicians, who were involved in further planning. Two months later, on 6 May 1974, the foundation stone was laid. It was the largest construction project in the district of Heilbronn up to that time. After three years of construction, the hospital opened on 1 July 1977 with 447 beds. It took over the functions of the Städtisches Krankenhaus Neckarsulm, which was dissolved and demolished. In 2003, the Kreiskrankenhaus Plattenwald was further expanded and renamed "Klinikum am Plattenwald". Since January 2001, it has been part of the SLK-Kliniken Heilbronn GmbH group. In February 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony for a new building took place. Over four years of construction, a seven-story building with a total area of 49,000 square meters and around 350 patient beds was built. Seven new operating rooms were created, including a hybrid OR where surgery and imaging control can take place simultaneously. On 13 May 2016, the 140 million euro hospital building was inaugurated, and on 4 June 2016, staff and patients moved into the new hospital. Due to the upcoming closure of the hospital in Möckmühl, the reserve floor was expanded in 2018, creating space for an additional 71 beds. In spring 2018, demolition work on the old Plattenwald building began. As of 2016, the hospital had around 390 beds. It treated more than 17,100 inpatients and more than 32,000 outpatients annually. Over 950 employees worked at the hospital. It housed seven clinics and two centers: the Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery, the Clinic for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, the Clinic for Internal Medicine I (Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine), the Clinic for Internal Medicine II (Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Diabetology), the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, Spine Surgery, the Clinic for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, and the Center for Anesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine and Pain Therapy. The centers were the Vascular Center and the Center for Geriatric Medicine with a geriatric focus.
