Overview

Klenk Holz was a German wood-industry company founded in 1904 by Albert Klenk as a sawmill. Over the 20th century it grew into a vertically integrated wood-processing group with sawmills, panel production, and energy generation from wood residues. In 1999 it became a stock corporation (Klenk Holz AG). After financial difficulties, the private equity firm Carlyle Group acquired it in 2013 from a trust of German banks. In 2017 Carlyle sold Klenk Holz to the Austrian Binderholz group. In April 2018 it was converted into Klenk Holz GmbH, and on 14 December 2020 it was renamed Binderholz Oberrot | Baruth GmbH and fully integrated into the Binderholz Group. The company operated sawmills in Oberrot (headquarters), Baruth, and through subsidiaries in Wolfegg, with a total cutting volume of about 2 million solid cubic meters per year and roughly 30% of products exported. Its French subsidiary, Klenk Holz France SAS, entered insolvency proceedings in 2009 and was liquidated by 2012. Today the Klenk name survives as part of Binderholz's German operations.

History

Klenk Holz was founded in 1904 by Albert Klenk as a sawmill. In 1946, Eugen and Hermann Klenk, aged 17 and 15, took over the business. In 1960 the company began producing formwork panels for the construction industry. In 1972 a third gang saw was put into operation and production of three-layer panels began. In 1975 a chipper plant was built, partially replacing the gang saw. In 1985 the first profiling lines were installed. Since 1976, waste from debarking roundwood has been utilized in a fully automatic bark combustion plant; in 1994 a combined heat and power plant was installed. In 1982 Klenk took over the Gaildorf plant. In 1996 Klenk acquired Arbor Holz in Baruth/Mark. In 2000 the subsidiary hiwo took over a sawmill in Waldburg-Wolfegg in Wolfegg, and in 2001 became majority owner of TTW Waldpflege. In 2002 Klenk commissioned a new large-diameter log sawmill in Volgelsheim, which was expanded into a profiling plant by 2007. In 1999 the stock corporation was founded. On 22 August 2013, the private equity firm Carlyle Group announced the acquisition of Klenk Holz AG; the seller was a trust company of German banks, with capital provided by Carlyle Strategic Partners (CSP). On 29 September 2017 Carlyle announced the sale to the Austrian company Binderholz. In April 2018 the company was converted into Klenk Holz GmbH. On 14 December 2020, Klenk Holz GmbH was renamed Binderholz Oberrot | Baruth GmbH and integrated as a subsidiary into the Binderholz Group. The company's total cutting volume in four sawmills was about 2 million solid cubic meters, with 30% of products exported. The company structure included plants in Oberrot (headquarters), Baruth, and subsidiaries hiwo with a plant in Wolfegg and TTW Waldpflege GmbH based in Oberrot. On 31 March 2009, insolvency proceedings were opened in court in Colmar for the subsidiary Klenk Holz France SAS. In the same year, the Volgelsheim plant was taken over by the Swiss Schilliger Holz AG. The insolvency proceedings were concluded in 2012 and the subsidiary liquidated.
