Klöckner & Co SE
A producer-independent distributor and processor of steel and metal products serving industrial and construction customers.
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Klöckner & Co SE is a German business-to-business distributor and processor of steel and non-ferrous metals. Founded in Duisburg in 1906 by Peter Klöckner and his brother Florian, the company began as an iron and steel trading enterprise and developed into an international distribution and services group. It operates independently of steel production, purchasing materials from producers and supplying them through regional sales, warehousing, processing and logistics networks. The company serves more than 60,000 customers through a network of approximately 110 warehousing and processing locations. Its customer base includes small and medium-sized businesses as well as large industrial companies, particularly in construction, mechanical and plant engineering, automotive supply, shipbuilding and other manufacturing sectors. The product range includes long steel products such as beams and sections, flat steel products such as sheet and coil, hollow sections, tubes, stainless and quality steels, aluminum and related processed materials. Klöckner also provides cutting, slitting, forming, sawing, surface treatment, logistics and other value-added services. Klöckner's history combines geographic expansion, diversification and repeated portfolio restructuring. During its early decades it built a broad German branch network and expanded into ore, raw materials and scrap. It later established foreign trading activities and entered additional sectors, including shipping, burner technology, chemicals, textiles, personal computers and mobile buildings. A failed crude-oil futures transaction in the late 1980s caused a severe financial crisis and led to ownership and management changes. The company subsequently returned its focus to steel and metals, selling or exiting non-core activities. After ownership changes involving Balli, WestLB and Lindsay Goldberg & Bessemer, Klöckner & Co was floated on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2006. The company pursued acquisitions in Europe, North America and Brazil, while also restructuring operations in response to cyclical demand. It became a Societas Europaea in 2008 and has traded under the KCO symbol in Frankfurt; its shares have been included in the SDAX since 2016. Since the mid-2010s, digitalization has become a central strategic theme. Through its digitalization center, kloeckner.i, the group developed online sales channels, connectivity services and the Kloeckner Assistant, an application designed to automate the handling of inquiries and orders received through conventional channels. The company has also emphasized higher-value processing and metalworking services rather than relying only on basic distribution margins. Sustainability is another major area of development. Klöckner groups lower-carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum products and related services under the Nexigen umbrella. Under Guido Kerkhoff, who became chief executive in 2021, the company further developed its sustainability program and expanded green-steel activities. More recent portfolio measures have included acquisitions in specialized processing and stainless-steel activities and the disposal of distribution operations in France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Belgium. The company remains an active European and North American metals distributor, although its precise geographic footprint and ownership structure require verification against the latest corporate filings.
History
Klöckner & Co was established in Duisburg on June 28, 1906, when Peter Klöckner and Florian Klöckner formed a general partnership to trade iron and steel. The founders built a branch network quickly: Cologne and Düsseldorf were followed by Berlin and Magdeburg in 1907, Hamburg and Dresden in 1909, and Mannheim in 1911. The business expanded beyond pig iron and steel into ore, raw materials, processing and, by 1913, scrap trading. The First World War disrupted production and created labor shortages. During the interwar period, the company developed foreign activities and strengthened its role as a trading intermediary across the industrial value chain. The trading business became increasingly distinct from the group's production operations, later known as Klöckner-Werke and Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz. The Nazi period and Second World War formed a grave and consequential part of the group's history. Klöckner companies were considered strategically important to German armaments production. Forced laborers and concentration-camp prisoners were used at associated industrial sites and mines, and prisoners were held at camps connected with operations including the Werne Colliery and facilities near Osnabrück. Some plants were damaged during the war. These facts require careful treatment in any corporate historical account. After 1945, the Allied authorities supervised the group and pursued its unbundling. The postwar reconstruction boom generated strong demand for steel, allowing Klöckner & Co to rebuild and expand. Following legal separation from the production companies during the 1950s, the trading company became more independent and diversified into activities such as shipping and burner technology. In the 1970s and 1980s it used internationalization and diversification to reduce exposure to fluctuations in the German steel market. A failed crude-oil futures transaction near the end of the 1980s produced an existential crisis and reduced the company's capital base by approximately 600 million Deutsche Mark. Deutsche Bank provided rescue financing and took control, while the business was converted into a stock corporation and ceased to be family-controlled. Ownership later passed to VIAG. During the 1990s the group still operated across several sectors, but in 1997 it announced a return to its core business of steel and metal trading. Balli acquired the company in 2001, and ownership subsequently moved to WestLB and Hamburgische Landesbank. Lindsay Goldberg & Bessemer acquired Klöckner & Co in 2005 and prepared it for a public offering. The company was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2006, entered the MDAX in 2007 and became an SE in 2008. It has been included in the SDAX since 2016. Following the IPO, Klöckner pursued an international acquisition program. Transactions included Primary-Steel in 2007, Temtco Steel in the United States in 2008, Becker Stahl-Service and Bläsi in 2009, Macsteel Service Centers USA and Frefer in 2011, Riedo Bau + Stahl in 2014 and American Fabricators in 2015. Later activity emphasized specialized processing, stainless steel and higher-value applications in Europe and North America. Gisbert Rühl became chief executive in 2009 and led restructuring in response to weak demand, including site closures, disposals and workforce reductions. At the same time, the company invested in digital tools. Since 2014, its kloeckner.i unit has supported digital procurement, data integration and automation, including the Kloeckner Assistant for processing inquiries and orders. Guido Kerkhoff succeeded Rühl in 2021. The group's subsequent strategy emphasized selective acquisitions, processing and metalworking capabilities, sustainability and lower-carbon materials. In 2023 the company announced plans to dispose of distribution operations in four European countries; the sale to Hierros Anon was completed in 2024. Klöckner's current business is organized around European and American operating segments and combines material distribution with processing, logistics, digital services and sustainability-oriented offerings.

Controversies
- 1980Crude-oil futures lossControversy
A failed crude-oil futures transaction in the late 1980s caused an existential corporate crisis and a major erosion of the company's capital base. The episode led to management and ownership changes and rescue financing.
- Forced labor during the Nazi period and Second World WarControversy
Workers subjected to forced labor and concentration-camp prisoners were deployed at Klöckner-Werke sites, mines and associated facilities during the Nazi era. Historical accounts describe prisoner camps connected with operations including Werne Colliery and the area near Hasbergen-Ohrbeck. This is a documented historical human-rights abuse associated with the wider Klöckner group and requires distinction between historical group entities.
