Overview

Kisag AG is a Swiss manufacturer of kitchen appliances and kitchen helpers headquartered in Bellach in the canton of Solothurn. Founded in 1945 by Walter Kissling as a metal foundry, the company initially recycled aluminium foil into cookware and kitchen devices for households and the catering trade. It became internationally famous for the Kisag Rahmbläser (cream whipper), patented in 1958, which used nitrous oxide cartridges to whip cream and sold over a million units worldwide, especially in the 1960s and 1970s. In Switzerland the device became so iconic that "Kisag" turned into a generic term for cream whippers. Today Kisag offers a portfolio of more than 200 products, ranging from the legendary whippers and perfectly coordinated fondue and raclette sets to innovative safety gas burners, caquelons, and durable kitchen tools made of silicone, wood, and stainless steel, as well as specialised professional equipment. The company serves ambitious home cooks, outdoor and camping enthusiasts, and professional gastronomy. It also acts as a manufacturer and supplier for numerous OEMs and private labels of major retailers. Since 2017 Kisag has been part of the VEBO Genossenschaft (cooperative) based in Oensingen, which continues to operate the company unchanged and with all jobs preserved. As part of the VEBO Group, Kisag emphasises social responsibility, inclusion, and sustainability, working with local organisations that provide sheltered employment. The company has been recognised for its social commitment, receiving the "Solothurner Sozialstern" in 2014. Kisag remains true to its Swiss location and Swiss Quality, with products sold through its online shop, its own factory outlet in Bellach, and a well-stocked specialist retail network.

History

Kisag AG was founded in 1945 by Walter Kissling as a foundry in Bellach, Switzerland. Kissling had been head of the raw materials section in the wartime economy office during World War II and had developed a process to recycle aluminium foil. From the recovered aluminium, Kisag produced a variety of kitchen appliances for households and gastronomy, including pans, pressure cookers, French fry cutters, fruit presses, and potato peeling machines. In 1958, Kisag patented a cream whipper (Rahmbläser) that was charged with nitrous oxide cartridges and made the manual whipping of cream unnecessary. Especially in the 1960s and 1970s, over one million units were sold worldwide (during this period the whippers were mostly made of plastic rather than aluminium). In Switzerland, the Kisag Rahmbläser became legendary and turned into a generic term for cream whippers. Around the turn of the millennium, sales figures declined massively due to the rise of spray cans of cream, although the whippers found new applications in molecular cuisine. Since then, Kisag has increasingly produced and distributed kitchen appliances (especially immersion blenders and safety gas burners) and kitchen helpers (e.g., peelers, turners, dough scrapers, garlic presses, can openers). In 1981, Kisag AG was taken over by Albert Brüngger; from 1995 to 2019, his son Urs Brüngger led the family business. In 2014, Kisag was awarded the "Solothurner Sozialstern" by the canton of Solothurn; this prize is given to companies or institutions that support people with mental disabilities. In 2017, the VEBO Genossenschaft in Oensingen took over Kisag AG, which has since continued the company unchanged and with all jobs preserved. Today, Kisag is an internationally active company with brand products known beyond national borders, offering over 200 products. As part of the VEBO Group, it carries a high level of social responsibility and works with various local organisations that provide sheltered employment. In addition to inclusion, sustainability plays a major role, with environmentally friendly material selection, production, and recycling considered in product development.
