Overview
Kirin Company, formally Kirin Holdings Company, Limited, is a Japanese beverage and consumer-products holding company whose roots lie in the development of modern commercial brewing in Yokohama. Its predecessor, the Japan Brewery Company, was established in 1885 after taking over the assets of the Spring Valley Brewery, a Yokohama brewery founded in 1869 by William Copeland. Kirin Beer was introduced in 1888, and the brewing business was reorganized as Kirin Brewery Company in 1907. The company retained a strong technical connection with European brewing, including the use of malt and hops imported from Germany and the employment of German brewing specialists, while building a distinctly Japanese distribution and marketing system. Kirin became one of Japan's best-known beer companies through products such as Kirin Lager and Kirin Ichiban Shibori. Kirin Lager is among the country's longest-established beer brands, while Ichiban Shibori is associated with a brewing process based on using the first wort extracted from the mash. The group also operates in low-malt beer and other alcoholic beverages, wine, distilled spirits, soft drinks, food, nutritional products, and health-related businesses. Recognizable non-alcoholic brands include Kirin Lemon, Mets, and Gogo no Kocha. The company has also applied fermentation and biotechnology expertise beyond beverages, including in pharmaceuticals, bioengineering, plant science, and functional foods. A major structural change occurred in 2007, when Kirin Brewery became Kirin Holdings, a holding-company structure. Kirin Brewery Company, Kirin Beverage Company, and Mercian became principal operating companies under the new arrangement. This model allowed the group to coordinate beer, spirits, wine, soft drinks, food, healthcare, and international investments while keeping major businesses in specialized subsidiaries. Kirin has also used alliances, acquisitions, and equity investments to expand outside Japan, including relationships with Lion in Australia and New Zealand, San Miguel Brewery in the Philippines, and brewing businesses in the United States and other markets. International expansion has produced both growth opportunities and strategic reversals. Kirin acquired control of Brazilian brewer Schincariol in 2011 and renamed the business Brasil Kirin in 2012, but later agreed to sell the business to Heineken. The group has also invested in wellness and healthcare, including Kyowa Hakko Bio and Fancl, while maintaining a large presence in alcoholic beverages. Its portfolio has changed over time through disposals such as the sale of its agribio business and the exit from Fraser & Neave. Kirin is a core member of the Mitsubishi Group and remains active as a diversified consumer and healthcare company. Its contemporary identity combines mass-market beverage distribution, premium and craft-oriented brewing, established Japanese brands, international alcohol operations, and an emphasis on fermentation science and health-related innovation. The name Kirin refers in Japanese both to a giraffe and to qilin, a mythical East Asian creature; the brewery's name derives from the latter.
History
Kirin's history begins with Spring Valley Brewery, established in Yokohama in 1869 by Norwegian-American brewer William Copeland. The brewery's assets later became the foundation for the Japan Brewery Company. In 1885, Japan Brewery was organized by William Henry Talbot and Edgar Abbott with financial support from Japanese investors, including Iwasaki Yanosuke of Mitsubishi. Thomas Blake Glover helped broker the arrangement. The company began marketing Kirin Beer in 1888. The business developed during a period when Japan's brewing industry was adopting European production methods. Japan Brewery used malted grains and hops imported from Germany and employed German brewers to supervise production. Its commercial success was supported by an exclusive relationship with Meidi-ya, which helped distribute and market the beer in Japan. By 1907, the company was largely managed by Japanese personnel, and the assets and operations were transferred to the newly incorporated Kirin Brewery Company. Kirin Brewery expanded its domestic beer portfolio and established Kirin Lager as a durable mass-market brand. It later introduced Ichiban Shibori and products in the low-malt category, while also developing soft drinks, spirits, wine, food, and nutritional products. The company gradually extended its technical capabilities from brewing into fermentation science, plant genetics, pharmaceuticals, and bioengineering. In 2007, Kirin reorganized as Kirin Holdings, placing Kirin Brewery Company, Kirin Beverage Company, and Mercian among its principal subsidiaries. The holding-company structure supported diversification and international investment. Kirin developed overseas operations and alliances in Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, the United States, Brazil, Europe, and other regions. Its international portfolio included Lion Nathan, a significant stake in San Miguel Brewery, and the Brazilian brewer Schincariol. The group's overseas strategy was not uniformly permanent. Kirin sold its agribio business in 2010, ended merger negotiations with Suntory in 2010, and acquired full control of Schincariol in 2011 before later selling Brasil Kirin to Heineken. The company also exited its investment in Singapore-based Fraser & Neave. At the same time, Kirin pursued higher-growth or adjacent sectors. It revived Spring Valley as a craft-oriented brewing business, acquired control of Kyowa Hakko Bio, invested in Fancl, and maintained links with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Kirin's corporate identity is closely associated with Mitsubishi, of which it is a core group member. The name refers to the qilin, a mythical creature in East Asian culture, rather than solely to the giraffe meaning of the Japanese word. Today, Kirin remains a diversified Japanese group centered on beverages but extending into health, nutrition, biotechnology, and related consumer businesses.
