Overview
Kinoteatr Planeta (Planeta Cinema) is a cinema located in the city of Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, at 39 Podilska Street. It occupies a building that originally served as a fire station, constructed between 1951 and 1954 based on a design by architect Hnat Chekirda. The building is recognized as a local architectural monument. In the 1980s, after reconstruction, the children's cinema "Planeta" was opened in the building. The cinema is managed by the Khmelnytskyi Regional Council. Over the years, the building has gained notable features, including a clock with a bell installed on the tower in 2004 that plays a musical fragment from the song "Proskurivsky Waltz" every hour, a large monitor on the facade in 2017, and a moving figure (jacquemart) added to the tower in December 2019. The cinema also houses a sculptural composition "Veselyi Potiah" (Merry Train) created between 1989 and 1991 by artist Mykola Mazur. Kinoteatr Planeta continues to operate as a cultural venue in Khmelnytskyi.
History
The building that now houses Kinoteatr Planeta was originally designed as a city fire station. The project for the fire station at the corner of Soborna and Podilska streets (then Karl Liebknecht and Karl Marx streets) was developed by architect Hnat Chekirda and approved in late 1946. Due to post-war hardship and lack of funds, construction began only in 1951. Four old buildings were demolished—two one-story and two two-story structures—and by 1954, the fire depot building with an observation tower (calanche) was erected. After the new fire depot was built elsewhere, the building housed a warehouse for "Ukroptgalantereya". In the 1980s, after reconstruction, the children's cinema "Planeta" was opened here. The building also housed the firm "Kinovideoprokat". Both the architectural monument and the cultural institutions within it are managed by the Khmelnytskyi Regional Council. In 2004, a clock with a bell was installed on the tower, playing a musical fragment from the song "Proskurivsky Waltz" (composer Ivan Pustovyi) every hour and striking the hours with bell sounds (electronic imitation). In 2017, a large monitor appeared on the cinema building. In June 2013, a memorial plaque honoring architect Hnat Petrovych Chekirda (1920–1990) was installed on the corner of the observation tower by the Khmelnytskyi Regional Organization of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine and the Khmelnytskyi City Executive Committee. In December 2019, a moving figure of a man (jacquemart) was installed on the tower, playing "Proskurivsky Waltz" four times a day. The cinema's foyer contains the original sculptural composition "Veselyi Potiah" (Merry Train), created in 1989–1991 by People's Artist of Ukraine Mykola Mazur. It is unique for its paradoxical combination of bright, plastic forms with material (structural steel, metal waste) and the author's technique (plastic deformation, selection of details imitating body parts and objects, welding).
