The venue remains a cultural landmark in Poltava, combining its historical architectural heritage with modern cinema operations.
History
The building that houses Kinoteatr Kolos was constructed in 1901 as the Poltava Enlightenment House named after Mykola Gogol, designed by St. Petersburg architect Oleksiy Trambytskyi in a neo-Renaissance style. It featured a rectangular auditorium with balconies and boxes, an orchestra pit, and a compact stage. The venue hosted numerous significant cultural events, including a 1902 demonstration in support of Leo Tolstoy, celebrations for the unveiling of the Ivan Kotliarevsky monument in 1903, and performances by prominent Ukrainian theatre figures. In 1906, the stationary Ukrainian theatre of M.K. Sadovskyi began operations there. From 1919 to 1929, the Poltava Opera Theatre performed in the building, and in 1936 it became home to the Poltava Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre named after Mykola Gogol. The building was destroyed during 1941–1943 and restored in the post-war years in its original architectural forms, adapted for use as a cinema. Kinoteatr Kolos opened in 1961 within the restored building. Its red and blue halls had a combined capacity of 864 spectators. The cinema did not operate from 2012 to 2014. Since 2016, it has been known as Wizoria Kolos, operating as part of the Wizoria cinema network. In 2003, a memorial plaque to Soviet actor Vladimir Gaidarov was installed on the building's facade to mark the 110th anniversary of his birth.
