Overview

Kino Evald is a small art-house cinema located on Národní třída in the centre of Prague, Czech Republic. It has 72 seats and programmes primarily artistic films. The cinema was founded in 1997 by the company CinemArt, with Jan Jíra among its founders. Its name honours Evald Schorm, a director of the Czech New Wave. The ceremonial opening took place on 13 September 1997, attended by people who had previously worked with Schorm; the following day, 14 September, his feature films were screened for the public. The founders originally intended to take over an existing cinema where neglected European, independent and quality Czech films could be shown. When that effort failed after more than a year, they decided to open a new cinema in the building on Národní třída where CinemArt had its offices, converting the basement space of the former Vysočina restaurant into the functioning Kino Evald. The cinema remains a venue for art-house and independent film in Prague.

History

Kino Evald was founded in 1997 by the company CinemArt, with Jan Jíra among the founders. The name chosen by the founders refers to Evald Schorm, a director of the Czech New Wave. The following day, 14 September, his feature films were screened for the public. The original intention was to acquire an established cinema where neglected European, independent and quality Czech films could be shown. Because this did not succeed, after more than a year of effort the founders decided to open a new cinema in the building on Národní třída where CinemArt was based. In the space of the former non-functioning Vysočina restaurant in the basement, they created the new functioning Kino Evald. The cinema has 72 seats and programmes primarily artistic films.
