Overview

Kinnevik AB is a Swedish listed investment company whose activities have evolved from traditional industrial ownership into active, long-term investment in technology-enabled growth businesses. Founded in 1936 by Robert von Horn, Wilhelm Klingspor and Hugo Stenbeck, the company initially built its portfolio through stakes in Swedish industrial, forestry, food and manufacturing businesses. Over time, Kinnevik became associated with entrepreneurial ownership, concentrated holdings and a willingness to challenge established markets, particularly in telecommunications, broadcasting, media and later internet commerce. The company's early portfolio included Mellersta Sveriges Lantbruks AB, Lidköpings Konfektyr Industri AB and Korsnäs Sågverks AB. It expanded through share purchases and acquisitions involving businesses such as Nordiska Suchard and Halmstads Järnverk. Kinnevik became publicly listed in 1954, giving it access to additional capital and establishing the listed investment-company structure that has remained central to its identity. During the following decades it increased exposure to industrial companies including Sandvik and Fagersta, acquired a major position in the insurer Atlantica, and assembled automotive interests under Svenska Motor AB, including Toyota import and sales operations. From the 1980s onward, Kinnevik increasingly pursued communications and media opportunities. Its involvement with Comvik brought it into conflict with Sweden's state telecommunications monopoly, while the group also developed satellite television and broadcasting activities. TV3 began broadcasting in 1987, Comvik received authorization for a new mobile network in 1989, and Millicom International Cellular was formed in 1990. Kinnevik subsequently became involved in radio, TV4 and the free-newspaper business. Metro International, launched in 1995, became one of the group's most internationally recognizable media ventures. Tele2, founded in 1993 and listed in 1996, became another important telecommunications holding. Kinnevik's media operations were reorganized through the formation of Modern Times Group, or MTG, which was spun off to shareholders in 1997. During the 2000s the portfolio shifted away from forestry and toward communications, consumer internet and e-commerce. From around 2010, Kinnevik became a prominent backer of digitally enabled companies, including Rocket Internet, Zalando, Avito and Global Fashion Group. These investments helped establish its modern profile as an owner of scalable consumer and technology businesses rather than a conventional industrial holding company. The company has subsequently repositioned its portfolio toward younger, disruptive and technology-enabled companies. Its stated investment areas include healthcare, software, marketplaces and climate technology, with an emphasis on value-based and virtual care in healthcare. Kinnevik has held interests in companies operating in digital healthcare, financial technology, online commerce, logistics and software. It has also distributed or sold several mature holdings, including interests in MTG, Millicom and Zalando, as part of portfolio rebalancing. Georgi Ganev became chief executive in 2018. The company supported the combination of Tele2 and Com Hem that year, distributed its MTG shares, and expanded investments in businesses including Livongo, Kolonial.no, Karma, Budbee, Pleo, Deposit Solutions, Cedar and Monese. In 2019 it distributed its remaining Millicom holding, and in 2021 it distributed its Zalando holding to shareholders. Kinnevik exited its remaining Teladoc holding in 2023. The company continues to operate as a listed, active investment owner with a portfolio spanning Europe and the United States.

History

Kinnevik was established in 1936 by Robert von Horn, Wilhelm Klingspor and Hugo Stenbeck as a Swedish investment company. Its first significant holdings were in agriculture, confectionery and forestry, including Mellersta Sveriges Lantbruks AB, Lidköpings Konfektyr Industri AB and Korsnäs Sågverks AB. The company expanded through acquisitions and share purchases in industrial businesses such as Nordiska Suchard and Halmstads Järnverk. This early period established a pattern of concentrated ownership and active participation in portfolio companies. Kinnevik became a listed company in 1954 through a new share issue. During the following decades it increased its interests in Swedish industry, including Sandvik and Fagersta, and acquired a major stake in Atlantica insurance. In 1980, several automotive businesses were combined under Svenska Motor AB, including operations importing and selling Toyota vehicles. The company gradually became more entrepreneurial and diversified, particularly as the Stenbeck family increased its influence. A major strategic shift began in telecommunications and media. In the early 1980s, Comvik introduced a mobile-telephony system and contested the position of the state-owned Televerket in a series of legal disputes. A favorable ruling by Sweden's Supreme Administrative Court supported Comvik's position. Kinnevik also developed satellite television distribution, and TV3 began broadcasting from London on New Year's Eve 1987. Comvik received authorization to establish a new mobile network in 1989, and Millicom International Cellular was formed in 1990. Kinnevik's broadcasting activities expanded in the early 1990s. The group began radio broadcasts in 1991 and became the largest shareholder in the newly established TV4, with a 20 percent stake. Tele2 was founded in 1993 and later listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1996. In 1995, the group launched Metro International, a free newspaper whose format subsequently spread to multiple countries. The same year, Kinnevik incorporated MTG as a subsidiary after it had operated as the Kinnevik TV & Media business area. MTG was spun off to shareholders in 1997 and listed in Stockholm and New York. Leadership and ownership evolved after the death of Jan Hugo Stenbeck in 2002. Edvard von Horn became chairman, followed by Pehr G. Gyllenhammar in 2004 and Cristina Stenbeck in 2007. Cristina Stenbeck announced her intention to leave the chair in 2016, when Tom Boardman succeeded her at the annual general meeting; she remained a board director. Between 2005 and 2010, Kinnevik shifted its portfolio toward Millicom and away from forestry. From around 2010, it increased investment in internet and e-commerce companies, including Rocket Internet, Zalando, Avito and Global Fashion Group. Kinnevik sold its remaining BillerudKorsnäs shares in 2013. Zalando and Rocket Internet completed initial public offerings in Frankfurt in 2014, Avito was sold to Naspers in 2015, and Kinnevik sold its remaining Rocket Internet holding in 2017. The current investment profile developed further after 2018. Georgi Ganev became chief executive, and the company invested in or increased exposure to digital healthcare, financial technology, software, marketplaces and other technology-enabled businesses. It supported the Tele2–Com Hem merger, distributed MTG shares, expanded investments in companies such as Livongo, Kolonial.no, Karma, Budbee, Pleo, Deposit Solutions, Cedar and Monese, and distributed its remaining Millicom holding in 2019. In 2021, it distributed its Zalando holding to shareholders to rebalance toward younger and more disruptive growth and venture investments. Kinnevik exited its remaining Teladoc holding in 2023 and continues as a listed investment company with a portfolio focused on healthcare, software, marketplaces and climate technology.
