Overview

The KIND Hörstiftung (formerly the Geers-Stiftung) is a German non-profit foundation under private law dedicated to the interests of people affected by hearing limitations. Its statutory purpose is to reduce the effects of hearing disability and to contribute to unrestricted participation in social life. It pursues this through the funding of research projects, the organisation of an interdisciplinary colloquium every two years, the awarding of a foundation prize for outstanding scientific work, and charitable support for selected projects, particularly in countries with inadequate care structures. Decisions on the allocation of funds are made by the Scientific Board and the Foundation Council. The foundation was established on 25 September 1976 by the Dortmund entrepreneurial couple Käthe and Theodor Geers, who had opened Germany's first hearing-aid specialist shop in 1951 and helped establish the profession of hearing-aid acoustician. It was created to mark the 25th anniversary of their company, Geers Hörakustik, with the aim of supporting cooperative and individual research projects through private initiative alone. For more than 40 years the GEERS-Stiftung successfully funded charitable projects as well as science and research around good hearing. Its biennial multidisciplinary colloquium, which addressed medical, social and pedagogical problems of hearing disorders, especially in children, regularly provided important impulses for new developments in healthcare. After the Geers family sold their family business GEERS Hörakustik to an investor, they initially continued the foundation themselves, but then decided to transfer it to the Kind family. The two families have known each other for over 60 years and, as long-term oriented family entrepreneurs, share both philosophy and values as well as a social commitment to the welfare of the hearing-impaired, especially children, in line with the foundation's purpose. The handover was signed on 1 June 2017 in Großburgwedel. The Kind family continues the foundation in the original spirit of the founders Käthe and Theodor Geers under the new name KIND Hörstiftung. "It is a great honour for us that the Geers family entrusts us with their renowned foundation," said Dr. Alexander Kind, managing director of KIND. "We are very pleased to be able to continue and further develop the foundation with its many great projects." The foundation's assets amount to approximately 360,000 euros, with an annual funding volume of around 30,000 euros. Since 1990 it has awarded a sponsorship prize, endowed with 15,000 euros, every two years for work on the causes, early detection and therapy of hearing damage. Multidisciplinary colloquia on key topics of hearing impairment research have been held every two years since 1981. The foundation is affiliated with the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V., which also manages its foundation assets. Its registered office is at Kokenhorststraße 3-5, 30938 Großburgwedel/Hannover.
