Overview

KIMA arkitektur AS is a Norwegian architecture practice based in central Oslo. It was established in 2008 by three architects — Inge Hareide, Martin Dietrichson and Kristoffer Moe Bøksle — who had already worked together since 2003, a collaboration described as helping to steward the final part of Sverre Fehn's career. The studio has built a reputation for projects of high architectural, technical and heritage complexity, particularly the transformation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings in Oslo. Among its best-known works are Pressens Hus, Telegrafen, Tollbodene and Sentralen, and from 2022 the conversion of the Kringkastingshuset / NRK Marienlyst broadcasting building. Several of these projects were carried out in collaboration with the architecture firm Atelier Oslo. KIMA describes its trademark as dedicated and thorough work, good communication with government and conservation authorities, and solution-oriented follow-up on site, and it holds central approval (sentral godkjenning) for architectural design in tiltaksklasse 3, the highest complexity class in the Norwegian building regulation system. The practice works across the cultural sector and has realised projects that combine architectural, building-technical, antiquarian and planning considerations. Its reputation among clients and contractors rests on a collaborative working climate maintained from the earliest phases through the whole construction process. In 2022 KIMA received the Jacobprisen, the City of Oslo prize for good urban architecture, and the Sundts premie for Pressens Hus; in 2024 it was named urban developer of the decade at Oslo Urban Week. The firm remains an independent, privately held Norwegian company.

History

KIMA arkitektur AS was established in 2008 by Inge Hareide, Martin Dietrichson and Kristoffer Moe Bøksle, with its office in central Oslo. The three key figures had already been collaborating since 2003, a period described as contributing to the stewardship of the final part of Sverre Fehn's career. From this foundation the practice developed a profile centred on complex projects, particularly the transformation of historic buildings. The studio's portfolio includes transformations of historic buildings in Oslo such as Pressens Hus, Telegrafen, Tollbodene and Sentralen, and from 2022 the conversion of the Kringkastingshuset / NRK Marienlyst broadcasting building. Several of these projects were carried out in collaboration with the architecture firm Atelier Oslo. KIMA has stated that it has built a secure position with a growing volume of commissions and a broad network of allied offices and environments, and that it has wide experience in the cultural sector, having in recent years realised several projects of high complexity in architectural, building-technical, antiquarian and regulatory terms. The firm holds central approval (sentral godkjenning) for architectural design in tiltaksklasse 3, the highest complexity class. It attributes its results to establishing a good collaborative climate with all involved parties from the initial phases through the entire construction process, and describes dedicated and thorough work, good communication with government and conservation interests, and solution-oriented follow-up on site as its trademark. Its reputation among both clients and contractors is noted as strong. Recognition followed: in 2022 KIMA received the Jacobprisen, the same year it received the City of Oslo prize for good urban architecture and the Sundts premie for Pressens Hus. In 2024 the firm was named urban developer of the decade at Oslo Urban Week. The practice remains an independent Norwegian company.
