History
Kilogram Records was founded in 2001 in the Tricity area of Poland by the Polish saxophonist and clarinettist Mikołaj Trzaska and his wife. The label emerged from the vibrant Polish improvised music scene and was established to document and promote adventurous music that often fell outside the mainstream. From its inception, Kilogram Records focused on improvised music, free jazz, and related genres, releasing albums by Trzaska's various groups as well as other artists. The label's catalogue grew to include work by musicians such as Tomasz Gwinciński, the drum duo Macio Moretti/Paul Wirkus, a trio with Hasse Poulsen and Mark Sanders, and the group Pole with Michał Górczyński. In 2008, the label was involved in the tour of the Resonance Ensemble, which led to the formation of the Inner Ear quartet, a project initiated by Ken Vandermark. Kilogram Records has consistently emphasised the visual aspect of its releases, collaborating with graphic designers to create distinctive packaging. The label is based in Gdańsk and remains active in the Polish and international improvised music community, organising concerts and releasing new music.
