Overview

Kids 'R' Kids is an American childcare center chain. Its Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies are described as impacting over 35,000 children a day in over 170 franchised academies across the country, with each school individually owned and operated. The first Kids 'R' Kids opened in 1985, founded by Pat and Janice Vinson, whose childcare business began in 1961 with Kiddie City. The company states it became the first childcare company to franchise.

History

The Vinsons' role in the childcare business began in 1961 when Pat Vinson and his mother, June, renovated their home into a day nursery for children and named it Kiddie City. Janice Whatley met Pat through a mutual friend and began working at the nursery; they married in the winter of 1963. After 24 years of operating Kiddie City, the couple sold their business in Decatur, Georgia to build a new school closer to the city. The first Kids 'R' Kids opened its doors in 1985. With growing demand and the success of their first preschool, another Kids 'R' Kids opened 14 months later, and a third location opened two years after that. Kids 'R' Kids became the first childcare company to franchise.
