Overview
Kharkiv Universal Department Store (Ukrainian: Універмаг «Харків») is one of the largest trading enterprises in Ukraine, built during the Soviet era and opened in December 1968 in Kharkiv. The three-storey building was designed by architects M. D. Yevsyukov, A. P. Bondarenko and A. H. Zaikovska using a modified standard design. At the time of opening its trading floors covered 5,600 m² and housed 60 self-service sections; the store was equipped with escalators and air conditioning, and offered a cloakroom, a children's room and home delivery. It quickly became the largest department store in the city and one of the largest in Ukraine. In the 1970s the store appeared on postcards and triangular lapel badges bearing the name «Універмаг „Харків“». After Ukraine gained independence and privatisation of state property began, work was carried out to privatise the Kharkiv department store along with other similar trading enterprises in the city. In 2012 the building was reconstructed and became a four-storey complex with a total area of about 18,000 m², of which trading halls account for 7,000 m². A free car park for 200 vehicles was arranged next to the store. Today the department store operates as a multi-tenant retail and services complex. Its official website presents it as one of the largest trading enterprises in Ukraine, located on the central and largest avenue of the city at the intersection of major transport arteries. The first three floors contain trading halls, while warehouse premises are located in the main building and in separate buildings on the store's territory. The site advertises rental of retail, warehouse and office space, including large office areas from 10 to 1,000 m² with round-the-clock access and parking. Among the departments and services listed are sections for German porcelain figurines, chandeliers, terry products, curtains and drapes, gold items, WhiteBox building materials, women's, men's and children's clothing, a football shop, household appliances, furniture, watches, blankets, tableware, Chudo Market, perfumes, a jewellery workshop, stationery, mobile accessories, advertising services, and a salon of elite furniture and decor. The store remains a popular and relevant place for Kharkiv residents and guests of the city.
History
The Kharkiv Universal Department Store was built in Kharkiv in 1968–1969 and opened in December 1968. The three-storey building was constructed to a modified standard design by architects M. D. Yevsyukov, A. P. Bondarenko and A. H. Zaikovska. At that time its trading areas occupied 5,600 m², housing 60 self-service sections. The department store was equipped with escalators and an air-conditioning system. It also had a cloakroom, a children's room and other additional services. A system for delivering goods to the home was created. The department store became the largest in the city and one of the largest in Ukraine. In the 1970s the Kharkiv department store was depicted on postcards, and triangular numbered badges with the inscription «Універмаг „Харків“» appeared. In the 1970s a terminus of trolleybus route 32 was built near the department store; the line ceased operation in 2009 and was finally dismantled in 2014. As early as the 1980s, pizza was sold in the department store, at a time when it was sold only in Moscow or at resorts of the USSR. After Ukraine gained independence and the campaign for the privatisation of state property began, work was carried out to privatise the Kharkiv department store among other similar trading enterprises in Kharkiv. In 2012 the department store was reconstructed. After the reconstruction the building became a four-storey complex with a total area of 18,000 m². The area of the trading halls is 7,000 m². A free car park for 200 vehicles was arranged next to the department store. The official website describes the store as one of the largest trading enterprises in Ukraine, located on the central and largest avenue of the city, which connects the outskirts of the city with the central part, at the intersection of major transport arteries in the city centre, on the red line of Moskovskyi Prospekt (now Heroiv Kharkiva Avenue). After the 2012 reconstruction it is a modern four-storey building with a total area of over 17,000 m². A free car park for 200 cars is organised on the area around the department store. The first three floors contain trading halls. Warehouse premises are located in the main building and in separately located buildings on the territory of the department store. A large number of goods and services available on the territory of the department store allows it to satisfy the needs of visitors and clients of the trading enterprise to the maximum. The department store has always been and remains a popular and relevant place for Kharkiv residents and guests of the city.
